Daugherty's defense leads Skyhawks volleyball to win over Westminster

Freshman Alyx Daugherty picked up 30 digs in the win to become the first Fort Lewis player since 2022 to do so.

SALT LAKE CITY – Skyhawks volleyball matched its win total from 2024 win a five set victory over Westminster University (9-6, 2-3 RMAC) on Tuesday, improving to 10-4 overall and 4-1in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

Fort Lewis hit .207 for the match and limited Westminster to a .160 efficiency. The Griffins were superior at the service line with eight versus just one for the Skyhawks, but the Skyhawks' backcourt defense outplayed the Griffins with a 93-85 edge in digs.

Defense was guided by freshman Alyx Daugherty who came away with a career-high 30 digs to go along with eight assists. Daugherty's mark of 30 digs is the most in a match for a Fort Lewis player since a 32-dig outing by Kamryn Lopez on September 23, 2022.

Junior Jordan DeJesus and freshman Cambria Freymuth delivered double-doubles with a combined 25 kills and 27 digs, while sophomore Addie Garn earned a double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs. Junior Alina Nunez was a difference maker with 13 kills while hitting .414. Freshman Arianna Reyna added 21 assists, nine digs, and three kills in the win.

The teams played close early in set one with the Skyhawks grabbing an 8-4 lead to cap off a three-point scoring run. Westminster rallied to take the lead at 9-8, but Fort Lewis answered with a 5-0 burst to reclaim the advantage. Fort Lewis held a 15-11 lead at the media timeout after an off-speed shot from Freymuth found the floor. Junior Ellie Ames ended an extended rally with a smart shot out of the middle to give the Skyhawks their largest lead of the set, forcing another timeout at 19-14. Westminster found a side out kill to slow the momentum, but a solo block by Ames and kill from senior Ryli Kalahiki closed out the set in a 25-20 score.

The Griffins regrouped and jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two thanks to five kills. Freymuth trimmed the difference to three points with a well-placed shot to the middle of the court, but Westminster pulled ahead by five points heading into the media break. The Skyhawks surrendered three errors out of the timeout, leading to a 19-11 lead for Westminster and another break in play. Kalahiki earned two more kills out of the break, followed by a shot by Freymuth to make it 21-15. Fort Lewis fought off three set points, but an attacking error ended the set in a 25-19 score.

Westminster enjoyed an 8-1 in the third set which was slowly chipped away at by Fort Lewis until a kill from Garn made it 10-10. The teams became tied two more times until an eight-point scoring run gave the Skyhawks a 21-13 edge The scoring run continued with shots from Kalahika and Freymuth landing for a 23-13 lead and a Westminster timeout. The Griffins earned the next four points out of the break, but a kill by Kalahiki gave the Skyhawks set point. The Griffins managed to put away a kill, but Nunez ended the set at 25-18 with her sixth kill of the match.

Senior Ivy Schoditsch entered the match in the fourth set and immediately went to work with a pair of blocks for an early Fort Lewis lead. Westminster pulled within striking distance before back-to-back kills from DeJesus allowed for a four-point advantage. The Griffins turned the tables with a five-point run to claim a lead and held the lead into a Skyhawks timeout at 19-12. Fort Lewis earned the next three points out of the timeout before two kills by Westminster called for another timeout. The Griffins went on to reach set point, but the Skyhawks fought off the end of the set and forced a Westminster timeout at 24-19. The final point of the set was an extended effort, but an attacking error sent the match to a fifth set.

Fort Lewis quickly jumped out to a lead thanks to kills from Freymuth and Nunez, as well as attacking errors on Westminster to make it 4-1. DeJesus made it a 6-3 set with a kill off the block, and freshman Caroline Munson tallied a pair of kills for an 8-5 lead as teams switched sides. The Skyhawks were forced to burn a timeout as a four-point scoring surge tied the set at 9-9 and scored the next two points for an 11-9 lead. Nunez took over from there, dropping in four consecutive kills to secure a 15-9 set and a five-set match for Fort Lewis.

Fort Lewis (10-4, 4-1 RMAC) returns to Whalen Gymnasium on Saturday at 4:00 PM for a match versus (RV) Colorado Mesa University (9-4, 3-1 RMAC).
