Smith erupts in Skyhawks debut, Fort Lewis edges Eastern New Mexico 76-73

Smith bursts into record book with ninth-most three-point field goals in a single game

PORTALES, N.M. – In a back-and-forth battle of high-speed defenses, it was transfer guard Jaxon Smith who put his talents on full display, knocking down 9-of-15 field goals to score a career-high 28 points and guide Fort Lewis men's basketball (1-0) to a gritty 76-73 win on the road over Eastern New Mexico University (0-1) in front of a rambunctious home crowd.

In a defensive throw-down that saw 18 lead changes and a tied score on 13 occasions, Fort Lewis' biggest moment came while trailing 67-63 just outside of the 5-minute mark. First, Smith slid into a side-step three-pointer out on the right wing to pull back within one point, and after back-to-back ENMU turnovers, buried another trey from the corner and drew the and-one foul to put his squad up by three points after converting at the charity stripe. The Skyhawks surrendered one final lead change by a single point thanks to free throws, but held on in a one-possession contest down the final stretch.

The Woods Cross High School graduate out of Bountiful, Utah, in his first 33 minutes donning the blue and gold, went off for a game-high 28 points while knocking down 7-of-11 treys to etch his name into the ninth most three-pointers made in a game in Skyhawks history. Smith also grabbed two rebounds and made a pair of assists. Chuol Deng supplied 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, one assist, and a game-high four steals. Yorgio Golesis scored 10 points in his debut, also grabbing three rebounds and adding an assist.

Fort Lewis may have outshot Eastern New Mexico 47.4 percent (27-57) to 41.4 percent (29-70) from the floor and a dominant 56.3 percent (9-16) to 18.5 percent (5-27) from beyond the arc, thanks to Smith, but the Greyhounds dominated the glass, the post and won the turnover battle. ENMU led off the glass 42-37, racked up 40 points in the paint, and scored 23 points off 16 Skyhawks turnovers. FLC managed just 14 points off 14 Eastern New Mexico turnovers.

Four players finished in double figures for the Greyhounds, including Jose Murillo with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double on 6-of-7 shooting. Murillo impacted all facets of the game, making two assists, blocking two shots, and grabbing two steals. Austin Mo paced the offense with 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. Austin Abrams and Treyvon Byrd supplied 14 points and 11 points each, respectively.
