11 Skyhawks score in dominant season opening win

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The lucky number for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team was 11 in its dominant season-opening win over Western New Mexico, earning points from 11 players and scoring 11 three-pointers—the most for a Skyhawks squad since 2019.

Not only did the group pour in 11 threes, but they did it efficiently with a 50 percent hit rate which would rank second in 28 games last season.

Fort Lewis shot 50 percent from the field (34-of-68) while totaling 41 rebounds, 17 steals, and 14 assists. WNMU shot 37.9 percent from the field (22-of-58) and just 39 percent at the charity stripe (9-of-23). The Mustangs compiled 31 rebounds and committed 23 turnovers.

Freshman Savanna Dotray and sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez led the team with 10 points apiece, followed by senior Ashten Martinez and freshman Josie Davis with nine points each. From there, three players scored eight points, one scored seven, and two scored six.

Davis was the leading rebounder with seven, followed by senior Sarah Chick and freshman Alemaualii Fonoti with six apiece. Sophomore Katie Lamb and Davis came away with three steals each.

The opening minutes of the new season featured a flurry of threes by three different Skyhawks to make it 12-2 through three minutes. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 21-7 with 2:45 to go thanks to the first career points for freshmen Josie Davis and Alemaualii Fonoti. Fort Lewis ended the quarter with an 8-0 run to see a 26-7 lead at the buzzer.

The Mustangs chipped away at the lead early in the second quarter with eight points on their own before a jumper by Makaya Porter ended the run. Fort Lewis broke a dry spell with a signature coast to coast play from Deniece Ryan, followed by a driving layup from Davis to make it 38-20.  The quarter closed with a buzzer beater from deep off the hand of Lamb, making it 48-25 and giving Fort Lewis a 7-of-11 mark from three through two quarters.

Ashten Martinez opened the third quarter with six points in the opening minute to bring the Fort Lewis lead to 54-25. Savanna Dotray brought the lead to 60-31 with a three-pointer, and the Mustangs followed with four points as the teams headed into a timeout. Dotray was effective again, this time with 44 seconds remaining, to end a WNMU run at 62-41.

Natalie Guanella kicked off the fourth quarter with a driving layup right out of the gate before the teams traded points to push the score to 69-45.  Three pointers continued to pour in for Fort Lewis with another pair extending the lead to 77-49 with 4:22 to go. The Skyhawks reached 81 points with a driving layup from Ryan and carried a 31 point advantage into the final two minutes. WNMU ended the contest with six points to bring the score to 83-57 at the buzzer.

Fort Lewis (1-0) will continue its week tomorrow with a 1:00 PM tip off against Cameron University.
