Four reach double-figures in 94-82 rout of Cameron

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Skyhawks women's basketball team poured in 16 three pointers, the third best mark in program history, to earn a 94-82 win over Cameron University on Saturday. Fort Lewis was led by junior Makaya Porter's 23-point outing, followed by three players with double-digit points.

With the win, Fort Lewis improved to 2-0 on the season while Cameron dropped to 0-2 overall.

As a team, Fort Lewis shot 41.4 percent (29-of-70) from the field and 41 percent (16-of-39) from three. The Skyhawks added 20 points from the free throw line to go along with 38 rebounds, 13 assists, and 10 steals. Cameron shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field, adding 13 three pointers and 23 free throws.

Porter's 23 points led the team, and she took away six rebounds to tie for the team lead. Junior Malia Ulery put up 15 points, followed by freshman Josie Davis with 14 points and a team-best four assists. Sophomore Katie Lamb added 12 points thanks to four made threes.

The three ball gave Fort Lewis its first lead of the afternoon with a trio making it 11-2 at the 6:22 mark. Cameron added a three pointer on its next possession, but Fort Lewis responded with three makes from beyond the arc for a 23-11 lead. The Skyhawks held a 33-16 lead at the buzzer thanks to nine total threes in the opening quarter.

It took nearly four minutes for the Skyhawks to register a field goal in the second quarter, but it was another three that broke the scoreless streak—this one off the hand of Porter. Davis and Lamb followed with two of their own to extend the lead to 42-22 midway through. Fort Lewis had a 49-30 lead at the half after draining 13 three-pointers through the first two quarters.

Cameron began the third quarter with its own three, followed by a pair of drives to mark a 7-0 scoring run. Davis ended the run with a layup, but Cameron pulled within 11 points with another from beyond the arc. The next minute featured back-to-back made field goals for Fort Lewis to highlight a scoring run that extended the lead to 63-43 with one minute to go. Free throws closed out the third quarter and made it 66-46 heading into the final quarter.

The Aggies came out with poise in the fourth quarter and sliced the difference to 14 points with seven early points. The teams traded points in quick succession over the next minute with the Skyhawks maintaining a 76-63 lead with 5:45 remaining. Cameron cut the difference to 12 points down the stretch, and that margin held after late free throws closed it out at 94-82.

Fort Lewis (2-0) plays at home on Tuesday at noon against St. Edward's University.
