Mustangs even score, hand Skyhawks a 95-86 loss at home

Deng, Golesis stay hot, combine for 43 points

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis men's basketball was dealt its first setback of the 2025-26 campaign on Friday night inside Whalen Gymnasium, as Western New Mexico found the edge off the glass and capitalized on small miscues to down the Skyhawks 95-86, even up the season series at 1-1, and avenge last Saturday's loss down in Portales, N.M.

Western New Mexico converted on 38 free throws in 45 attempts (84.4 percent) and bested Fort Lewis off the glass 42-38 to climb to 2-1 overall on the season. The Skyhawks fall to an identical 2-1 overall, despite outshooting the opposition 41.5 percent (27-65) to 38.5 percent (25-65) from the floor.

Fort Lewis held just three leads in the game, two in the opening three minutes of action, and its final lead from the 9:03 to 6:03 marks late in the second half, only holding off the Mustangs by as many as three points. Western New Mexico capitalized on its 13-point first-half lead, holding a four-point advantage heading into halftime to ultimately never trail Fort Lewis by more than a single possession.

Chuol Deng finished in double figures for his fourth consecutive game dating back to last season, scoring a game-high 24 points while grabbing nine rebounds, blocking two shots, and nabbing a steal. Deng was also perfect at the line, leading Fort Lewis to 28 conversions in 35 attempts (80.0 percent) at the charity stripe. Yorgio Golesis poured in 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Keither Florence had a strong night, supplying 15 points and seven rebounds, and Donald Bangham, Jr., added a final 12 points to round out the Skyhawks in double figures.

Carson Kelly was right on Deng's heels, leading WNMU with 23 points on 5-of-13 shooting with a 9-of-10 mark at the free-throw line. Andre Harris, held to four points in the two teams' first meeting, dominated the lane for a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double. Harris also led the Mustangs with six assists and all four blocked shots. Isaiah Broady and Cortaviaus Seales added another 16 points and 14 points, respectively.

The Skyhawks made nine steals to the Mustangs' seven, but still lost the overall turnover battle 14-15. Most notably, Western New Mexico, despite being outscored in the paint 44-28, found 24 second-chance points and 19 points off turnovers.

-Western New Mexico snapped Fort Lewis' four-game winning streak in the series, even tying the 2025-26 season series up at 1-1 after FLC defeated WNMU 85-82 last weekend (Nov. 15), but the Skyhawks still lead the Mustangs 51-45 all-time.
