Davis' defense leads Skyhawks to decisive win over Lobos

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Women's basketball continued its undefeated season on Friday with a convincing 89-67 win over Sul Ross State University, improving to 5-0 and sitting just one win shy of its total from the 2024-25 season.

Fort Lewis shot 47 percent from the field (31-of-66) and dropped in 22 free throws. Sul Ross State came away with 21 free throws while shooting 34.4 percent. The Skyhawks earned a season-high 51 rebounds to go along with 19 assists and 13 steals.

Four players contributed double-digit points, led by junior Makaya Porter with 19 points to go along with five blocks. Sophomore Katie Lamb followed with 17 points, and junior Natalie Guanella added 15. Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti had 10 points in 10 minutes of play. Freshman Josie Davis earned a career-high with 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.

Fort Lewis dug out of an early hole thanks to eight points by Guanella to carry a 10-6 lead through three minutes. Hot shooting continued for the Skyhawks with the run extended to 12-2 for a double-digit lead at the midway point. Sul Ross State eventually broke its scoreless stretch with a drive to the basket, snapping four minutes of scoreless hoops, but Davis followed with a quick and-one for a 23-11 lead. The quarter ended with a buzzer-beater three from Lamb to make it 31-17.

The second quarter was heavy defense for both teams with zero field goals made through the first five minutes. Despite the break in scoring, Guanella broke though with a driving layup for a 38-21 lead and her 12th point of the afternoon. Dotray got her hands on a pair of inbound passes from the Lobos, converting one for a quick layup and a 48-24 lead in the final minute. Sul Ross State knocked down two free throws late to send the teams to the break in a 48-26 score.

The Lobos began the third quarter with their first three pointer of the game, followed by traded points for both teams through two minutes. Free throws made up the next two minutes of play with the scoring moving to 55-36 in favor of Fort Lewis with 6:38 to go. The next several minutes saw hard defensive play for the Skyhawks, resulting in fouls whistled against Fort Lewis. The fouls ended up in an 8-0 scoring run for the Lobos and a 63-49 score. Lamb gave her team more breathing room with back-to-back threes and a 69-51 edge. Fort Lewis held a 72-53 lead at the end of the third despite Sul Ross State going 11-of-11 from the stripe.

The Skyhawks opened the fourth with a scoring surge to build the lead back up to 22 points. The Lobos pressed to pull within 14 points, but Davis responded with a quick layup to make it 82-66 with under four minutes to play. The Skyhawks used six points over a 20 second burst to reclaim a 22-point advantage heading into the final minute. Fort Lewis earned a steal from Laisha Armendariz in the closing seconds and ran out the clock on an 89-67 score.

Fort Lewis (5-0) continues play tomorrow at the Mavericks Thanksgiving Classic where it faces Simon Fraser University at noon.
