Comeback falls short in Skyhawks’ first loss of season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team nearly overcame a challenging shooting contest, outscoring Simon Fraser University in the fourth quarter but surrendering a 74-67 loss to close out the Mavericks Thanksgiving Classic.

The Skyhawks shot 31.2 percent from the field and just 8.7 percent from three in the loss. Fort Lewis benefited from 50 rebounds and forced 16 turnovers from the Red Leafs.

Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti contributed a season-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore Katie Lamb added 14 points and sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez put up 10. Palacio Gámez added seven rebounds and six assists in the game.

Defense dominated the early goings with six Skyhawks rebounds through two minutes of play, leading to a 4-4 tied score. Fort Lewis grabbed its first lead of the afternoon at the 5:48 mark and capped off a 6-0 scoring run with a jumper from Porter. Simon Fraser used a pair of three-pointers to tie the game again, this time at 14-14, with under three minutes to play. Lamb drew a late foul and dropped in a pair of free throws to close out the quarter in a 19-17 deficit.

The Red Leafs benefited from two early drives to take a six-point lead before the Skyhawks managed two points from junior Natalie Guanella. Lamb stepped up over the next 90 seconds of play with two smooth three-pointers to cut the difference to 27-25 with 5:50 remaining. The Skyhawks mounted a comeback thanks to four points by Fonoti to take a 31-30 lead at the 2:47 mark. Fort Lewis maintained the lead until the final minute of the quarter when free throws and a late driving layup gave Simon Fraser a 36-33 lead at the buzzer.

Palacio Gámez began the third quarter with a jumper for a one-point difference, and the teams played scoreless for the next three minutes. Simon Fraser went on to score two three-pointers between the seven- and five-minute marks to make it 44-35 at the media timeout. The Skyhawks found a much-needed field goal from Palacio Gámez after a turnover to hold the game at a 10-point difference with one minute to go. Fonoti beat the buzzer with a layup to make it 55-45 heading into the final quarter.

Simon Fraser scored on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game, and Fort Lewis worked to cut it to 10 points at the 7:33 mark. The Skyhawks' defense held the Red Leafs scoreless for the next 2:32 while scoring 4 points, making it 68-57 heading into a media timeout. Porter knocked down a mid-range jumper to trim the deficit to single digits, and Lamb followed with a layup for a three-possession game with 2:50 to go. Fort Lewis made things interesting in the final seconds with four points by Fonoti but ultimately fell by a 74-67 final.

Fort Lewis heads into conference play next week with road games against MSU Denver (1-5) and Regis University (0-3). The Skyhawks open play on Thursday, December 4 against the Roadrunners before taking on Regis on Saturday.
