Women's basketball drops conference opener to Roadrunners

DENVER – Fouls plagued the Fort Lewis College (5-2, 0-1 RMAC) women's basketball team in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener, leading to a 95-81 win for MSU Denver (2-5, 1-0 RMAC).
 
The Skyhawks were charged with 32 fouls in the contest, leading to 37 free throws for the Roadrunners, of which the home team converted 26. MSU Denver enjoyed a strong shooting night from beyond the arc, going 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) compared to eight makes and a 33.3 percent efficiency for Fort Lewis.
 
Sophomore Katie Lamb led the team with 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Freshman Savanna Dotray followed with 14 points and five rebounds, while freshman Alemaualii Fonoti added 13 points. Junior Natalie Guanella added five steals and three assists—both team-highs.
 
Fort Lewis found itself in a hole early in the first quarter when MSU Denver hit a three-pointer, making it 9-2 at the eight-minute mark. Guanella cut the deficit one minute later after converting a steal into a layup, and Fonoti followed with a drive on the following possession for a 9-6 score. Dotray tied the score at 11-11 with 5:33 to go thanks to five-straight points, but the Roadrunners answered with a 13-2 scoring run to capture a 10-point edge. Palacio Gamez closed out the quarter with a buzzer-beating three to make it 26-19 in favor of MSU Denver.
 
Laisha Armendariz opened the second quarter with a three-pointer off an assist from Guanella, followed by another Fonoti layup to cut the difference to two points. The Skyhawks capitalized on Roadrunners' turnovers and eventually grabbed a 31-30 lead after another three by Palacio Gamez. The teams traded the lead for the remainder of the quarter, with a late jumper by Davis ending the half in a 42-42 deadlock.
 
MSU Denver came out of the break with a quick field goal from deep and added a jumper on its next possession for a 47-42 lead. The Skyhawks stayed within striking distance thanks to scores by Davis and Porter to make it 51-49 midway through. The Roadrunners continued to spend time at the free-throw line with two makes, giving them a six-point lead. Lamb went to work and quickly eliminated that lead with back-to-back three pointers to tie the score. The Roadrunners reclaimed the lead thanks to additional free-throw shooting and entered the fourth quarter with a 65-61 lead.
 
The Roadrunners heated up from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, knocking down a pair to extend the lead to 10 points at the 8:24 mark. Guanella and Palacio Gamez combined for four points to make it 76-69 with under six minutes to go, but MSU Denver answered with a scoring run to make it 82-69. Fort Lewis saw two players foul out with three minutes remaining in the game. The Roadrunners recorded 10 free throws down the stretch to close out the game in a 95-81 final.
 
Fort Lewis (5-2, 0-1 RMAC) will close the road trip out on Saturday with a 1:00 PM game against Regis University in Denver.
