Turnovers doom Skyhawks in road loss to Cowboys

Penney sets program record for career solo tackles at 201

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Despite Jacob Morris throwing for a career-high 270 yards and one touchdown, and Zachary Gaumont recording his second-career two-touchdown effort with a 75-yard receiving touchdown and an eight-yard rushing touchdown, the Skyhawks couldn't contain the Cowboys' running game as Fort Lewis ultimately fell 31-14 to New Mexico Highlands University in front of crowd of 2,074 at Sanchez Family Stadium.

Fort Lewis (2-8, 1-7 RMAC) had the first opportunity to score, but the 41-yard field goal attempt went wide left, creating the opportunity for the Cowboys (6-4, 4-4 RMAC) to get right where they wanted to be, punching in a one-yard rushing touchdown with Tevita Valeti before Alekzander Britt went on to nail a 30-yard field goal and put New Mexico Highlands up by two scores.

The Skyhawks scored on the very next play from scrimmage, with Morris hurling a deep-ball 50 yards through the air to connect with a streaking Gaumont on the NMHU 25-yard line en route to a touchdown, and later, Gaumont's fourth career 100-yard receiving game. However, it would stand as Fort Lewis' lone score until Gaumont found the end zone once more on a reverse in the fourth quarter.

Like a moth to a flame, Jake Penney continued to cause havoc on the defensive side of the Skyhawks, racking up a game-high 15 total tackles–his fourth time this season with 15+ tackles–while adding 1.5 tackles for five yards lost, including a five-yard solo sack. Jonathan Stewart picked up Fort Lewis' only other sack with a one-yard solo stop. With his five solo tackles, Penney becomes the first Skyhawk in program history to record over 200 solo tackles, and sets the all-time career solo tackle mark at 201, passing Shane Voss' mark of 196 from 1990-93. Penney still ranks fourth all-time in career tackles for the program with 338, chasing Phillip Odell's (2008-12) record of 367 by just 29 tackles.

New Mexico Highlands stuck to its guns, rushing for 304 yards of its 383 yards of total offense–the Cowboys' fifth game this season with 300+ rushing yards. Valeti would add another one-yard rushing touchdown later in the fourth quarter, but he finished with 72 yards on 18 attempts behind freshman sensation Jeffery Jones, who racked up 190 yards and a pair of 80-yard and 10-yard rushing touchdowns on 20 carries. Quarterback Collin Struck poured in 31 yards and 12 carries while also sitting in the pocket for 79 yards on 10 completions in 15 attempts (66.7 percent).

The Cowboys' defense also forced four turnovers, leading to a commanding lead in time of possession with 37:52 seconds against Fort Lewis' 22:08 seconds. Trevor Romaldo hauled in two interceptions, while Dontaivious Nelson and Fabiano Valdez punched out a pair of forced fumbles each.

Morris was nearly all of Fort Lewis' offense, with his 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) passing performance accounting for nearly all of the Skyhawks' 317 yards of total offense. With Morris suffering four sacks across the afternoon, including 1.5 sacks for 10 yards lost from New Mexico Highland's Ben Watson, the offense posted just 47 yards rushing, paced by KB Broadus' 42 yards on eight carries.

Penney also claimed Fort Lewis' program record and stands alone with 201 career solo tackles. His 338 total tackles also rank fourth all-time in program history.
-Fort Lewis' four total turnovers are its second-most in a game this season, behind its five against William Jewell (Aug. 30) in the season-opener.
