Slow start dooms Skyhawks in loss to Grizzlies

DURANGO, Colo. – An early hole was too much to climb out of for the Fort Lewis College (7-3, 2-2 RMAC) women's basketball team in a 78-50 loss to Adams State University (9-3, 4-0 RMAC) on Saturday.

The Skyhawks were just 1-of-15 from the field in the first quarter but ended the game shooting 31 percent from the field. The Grizzlies used consistent play to shoot 51.2 percent from the field while going 30-of-35 at the free throw line. Fort Lewis owned a 42-35 advantage in rebounds and forced 22 turnovers.

Defensively, the Skyhawks were led by freshman Josie Davis with 11 rebounds and four steals—both team-highs. Freshman Savanna Dotray led the team with 11 points, followed by freshman Alemaualii Fonoti with eight.

The Skyhawks opened the game in a 14-0 hole before Davis dropped in a free throw to make it 14-1 at the 4:16 mark. Free throws made up the remainder of the first quarter, making it 23-4 at the buzzer. Dotray was responsible for the lone field goal in the quarter for Fort Lewis.

Fort Lewis held Adams State scoreless for two minutes in the second quarter before a 13-0 scoring run had the visitors ahead 37-4. Davis snapped the run with another layup and eventually gave her team 10 points with two minutes to go. Sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez ended the half with a three-pointer in the final seconds for a 42-17 score at the buzzer.

Fort Lewis began to make some headway in the third quarter, starting with a three-pointer from sophomore Katie Lamb after three minutes of scoreless play. The Grizzlies scored their first field goal of the quarter at the 5:46 mark, followed by free throws from both teams. Dotray trimmed the difference to 20 points with three minutes on the clock and went on the make it 50-36 with 28 seconds to go. Adams State went to the free throw line on the next possession, but Lamb ended the quarter with a three to make it 52-39.

Adams State began to re-pad its lead in the fourth quarter with five early points before junior Makaya Porter added a layup for Fort Lewis. The difference lingered at 13 points midway through, but the visitors ended the game on a 17-2 scoring run to earn a 78-50 win.
