Fort Lewis' defensive effort leads to quality win over Maryville

TYLER, Texas – A stingy defensive effort, led by four steals and seven rebounds from junior Makaya Porter, limited Maryville University to 23 percent shooting as the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team opened the DII Christmas Tournament with a 62–50 victory on Wednesday.

With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 8–3 overall and 4–1 in neutral-site games, while the Saints dropped to 8–3.

Fort Lewis shot 36.4 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from three-point range but struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 57.7 percent. Maryville finished 26.9 percent from beyond the arc and 68.2 percent at the stripe, narrowly outrebounding the Skyhawks 47–45.

Senior Ashten Martinez led Fort Lewis with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added five rebounds. Sophomore Katie Lamb chipped in 12 points, while Porter finished with 11 points to complement her defensive presence. Four Skyhawks grabbed six rebounds apiece, including freshmen Alemaualii Fonoti and Josie Davis.

Martinez opened the game with a jumper in the team's first possession, and layups from Guanella and Fonoti made in a 6-5 lead later on. Porter reclaimed the lead for Fort Lewis two minutes later with points off back-to-back steals for a 9-7 score. Dotray padded the lead down the stretch, a benefit for Fort Lewis after a buzzer beater fell for Maryville, making it a 12-11 lead for the Skyhawks after one quarter.

The early stretch once against belonged to Martinez after a layup and two three's extended the lead to nine points. The Saints chipped away at the lead, eventually taking advantage of a turnover to convert a three-pointer for a 22-20 score. Lamb responded with a trio of her own field goals from deep to give Fort Lewis its second 10-point lead of the contest. Maryville held Fort Lewis scoreless through the final two minutes of the half while adding four points for a 31-25 score at the break.

The Skyhawks were the first to score in the third quarter thanks to a layup by Palacio Gámez, but the Saints came back with a 5-2 scoring run for a 35-30 score. Defense ruled the next few minutes with just one three-pointer from Maryville dropping in through the midway point. Porter ended the dry spell with a free throw and layup for a 40-33 lead at the 2:50 mark. The Saints fought back again, scoring four points over the next minute to make it a one possession game. Defense came through for the Skyhawks in the waning moments, leading to three points and a narrow 43-40 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Saints found a tied score two minutes into the fourth quarter after a Fort Lewis turnover led to a three-pointer, but Fonoti reclaimed the lead 40 seconds later with a layup. The Skyhawks tacked on four more points off shots from Davis and Guanella for a 49-43 lead with under six minutes to play. Maryville punched back, taking advantage of untimely turnovers to tie things up again, this time at 49-all with 5:03 to go. Fort Lewis worked its way to the free throw line to pick up five points and a 54-49 lead with 2:53 on the clock. Porter was the hot hand over the next minute with a three, a steal, and a layup to make it 59-50 heading into the final two minutes. Things got intense in the final minute with a pair of technical fouls assessed, but Fort Lewis capped off the win with Lamb at the stripe for a 62-50 final.

Fort Lewis (8-3, 2-2 RMAC) ends its nonconference play tomorrow with a 1:00 PM tip-off against UT Tyler. The Patriots are 6-4 this season and 3-0 on their home court and face off against Adams State University today.
