Women's basketball earns conference win over Rangers

DENVER – Junior Natalie Guanella gave Fort Lewis College (6-2, 1-1 RMAC) a late lead with a clutch three-pointer, and sophomore Katie Lamb put a nail in the coffin at the charity stripe to capture a gritty 67-64 road win over Regis University (0-6, 0-2 RMAC) on Saturday.

Fort Lewis shot 38.7 percent from the field, 30 percent from three, and 61.9 percent from the stripe. Regis was 42.1 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from three, and 58.8 percent at the free throw line. The Rangers were led by Jessica Bollwahn's 19-point, 19-rebound performance.

Junior Makaya Porter led the team with 17 points, followed by sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez and freshman Savanna Dotray with 11 each. Fort Lewis recorded 23 steals, with eight players picking up a steal. Palacio Gámez and freshmen Antia Gonzáles Docampo and Josie Davis each came away with four to lead the way.

Freshman Alemaualii Fonoti opened the scoring with a tough layup in the opening minutes before both teams went quiet for nearly 90 seconds. Fort Lewis broke the lull at the seven-minute mark when Lamb converted inside, and the Skyhawks soon stretched the lead to 9–5 thanks to a Porter jumper. A strong defensive sequence set up a Palacio Gamez three-pointer that doubled the advantage with 2:46 remaining. Dontray closed the quarter on a tear, scoring five points in the final minute to send Fort Lewis into the break with a 21–16 lead.

Regis capitalized on Skyhawk turnovers and cold shooting early in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to one within the first two minutes. Dotray briefly restored separation with a pair of free throws, but the Rangers answered with a run of their own, taking a 29–28 lead at the line with 4:40 left. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, and more free throws nudged the Skyhawks ahead 36–35 late in the frame. Dotray added another bucket in the closing seconds, giving Fort Lewis a 38–35 edge at halftime.

A 6–2 burst by the Rangers opened the third quarter, pushing the home side in front until a Guanella free throw evened the score again. Fort Lewis struggled at the line, allowing Regis to keep things tight, and the Rangers moved ahead 52–50 entering the final minute. The Skyhawks forced a late turnover, springing Fonoti for a buzzer-beating layup that sent the game into the fourth quarter tied at 52.

Palacio Gamez took command early in the fourth, drilling back-to-back threes to make it 58–52 with 7:41 remaining. Regis slowly chipped away, holding the Skyhawks scoreless to reclaim a 58–57 lead with under five minutes to play. Two free throws swung the lead back to the Rangers, but four quick points from Fonoti and Porter restored a 62–59 Fort Lewis advantage. Regis again capitalized on turnovers to move ahead 63–62 with 1:34 left, but the Skyhawks responded immediately—forcing a turnover and finding Guanella for a clutch three that put them back on top with 1:05 remaining.

Fort Lewis forced another Ranger turnover with 35 seconds left, but missed a layup, giving Regis one last chance. The Rangers drew a foul and hit one free throw to pull within one. Lamb was fouled on the ensuing inbound and calmly knocked down both shots, extending the lead to 67–64. A defensive rebound on a desperation heave sealed a gritty road victory for the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis plays at home next week with a Tuesday/Saturday split. The Skyhawks welcome New Mexico Highlands for a 5:30 PM tipoff on Tuesday, followed by a 1 PM tip versus Adams State University on Saturday.
