Women's basketball rallies for comeback win over Cowgirls

DURANGO, Colo. – After trailing for nearly 28 minutes, a fourth-quarter comeback for the Fort Lewis College (7-2, 2-1 RMAC) women's basketball team stole a 74-71 win from New Mexico Highlands University (4-4, 1-2 RMAC) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Tuesday evening.

Fort Lewis shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the field, the third-best shooting performance of the season, compared to a 45.6 percent (27-of-57) efficiency for New Mexico Highlands. The teams were identical from the three-point range with a 3-of-13 mark. The Skyhawks had a narrow 35-34 edge in rebounds and benefited from 22 turnovers by the Cowgirls.

Five players reached double figures for Fort Lewis, led by freshman Josie Davis' career-high 17 points. Sophomore Katie Lamb followed with 15 points while junior Natalie Guanella came away with 12 after a 6-of-7 mark from the field. The duo of freshman Alemaualii Fonoti and Claudia Palacio Gámez added 11 points each. Davis led the team with six rebounds while Palacio Gámez dished out six assists.

Guanella gave Fort Lewis an early lead with a pair of athletic drives to the rim, but the Cowgirls capitalized on turnovers to grab a 6-4 lead through three minutes. The Skyhawks responded with gritty play to tie the score at 8-8 heading into the first media break. Defense highlighted the next three minutes of play with a jumper from Porter making it 12-10 in favor of New Mexico Highlands. Fonoti was the final Skyhawk to score in quarter one after running out the shot clock for a 16-12 mark at the buzzer.

The second quarter opened with another run from Guanella, bringing her point total to eight and making it an 18-16 deficit. The Cowgirls benefited from the press and exploded on a scoring run to bring their lead to 26-16 at the 7:33 mark. Lamb got to the line and snapped a 12-2 scoring run for New Mexico Highlands, making it 30-20 in favor of the visitors. The two-minute mark featured a pair of free throws by Davis to make it an eight-point difference, and the freshman went on to fight for a layup and a 36-30 score. Despite the late push, the Cowgirls responded to take a 41-30 lead into halftime.

Fort Lewis found its footing in the third quarter, opening with a jumper from Fonoti for a nine-point difference. From there, Palacio Gámez and Guanella combined for seven points to send the teams into a timeout in a 43-39 score. The difference was trimmed to two points with four points in the span of 18 seconds, and a drive on the following play by Palacio Gámez knotted things at 45-45. The Skyhawks were held scoreless over the next two minutes of play to slip into a 50-45 deficit, and the final 90 seconds featured a slew of field goals to make it 59-49.

The fourth quarter was slow to start, with just free throws marking scoring through two minutes. Davis provided a spark after converting a steal for two points, an effort that led to a 9-0 scoring run and a 61-59 score with six minutes to play. The Skyhawks trimmed the difference to one point and eventually grabbed the lead with 4:34 remaining after Lamb converted on a three-point play for a 66-64 lead. Lamb took control of the next minute with back-to-back threes for a 73-67 lead with under two minutes remaining. The Cowgirls made it a one-possession game at the stripe, but the Skyhawks answered with a crucial stop on the ensuing play to maintain a lead. The final 10 seconds featured a free throw by Davis, an official review, and a rogue inbound pass to secure the come-from-behind win for Fort Lewis.

Fort Lewis (7-2, 2-1 RMAC) will turn its attention to Saturday's home contest against Adams State University (7-2, 2-0 RMAC). The Grizzlies were idle this evening but face New Mexico Highlands on Thursday in Las Vegas, N.M.
