Mavericks dominate off the glass, upend Skyhawks in Thursday night tilt

Fort Lewis hauled in fourth-fewest rebounds in program history

DURANGO, Colo. – Despite a boisterous home crowd and swiping 21 steals, the fourth-most in program history, there was seemingly nothing Fort Lewis (15-9, 9-6 RMAC) could do to stop Colorado Mesa (14-9, 8-7 RMAC) off the glass as the Mavericks out-rebounded the Skyhawks 59-to-23 en route to handing the blue and gold its first loss at home since Dec. 7.

The Skyhawks tied for the tenth-most steals in a game in Division II this season and turned the Mavericks over 29 times, which is the most by an RMAC team in 2024-25 and the most since Fort Lewis forced the same out of Dine College back on Nov. 25, 2016. Stewart Erhart and Tru Allen, who supplied 10 and nine points, respectively, tied for a game-high six steals with Allen matching his single-game career-high.

Simply put, Colorado Mesa had their way in the post. CMU out-scored FLC 42-to-16 on points in the paint while holding the home squad to its fourth-fewest rebounds in program history, and the fewest since the Mavericks limited the Skyhawks to 23 rebounds back on Jan. 18, 2020.

Five Mavericks finished in double-figures in a full team effort, with Yaak Yaak picking up a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double alongside Will Mortimore, who also had a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. Redshirt junior guard Ty Allred led CMU with a team-high 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a 3-of-3 clip from downtown and a 4-of-5 mark at the free throw line, and had nine rebounds. Christopher Speller finished two rebounds shy of a double-double as well, scoring 15 points while grabbing eight boards. In addition, Harvey White added the final 13 points to round out the Mavericks in double-figures.

Colorado Mesa out-shot Fort Lewis in every facet including 56.1 percent (32-57) to 34.3 percent (23-67) from the field, 46.2 percent (6-13) to 39.5 percent (15-38) from beyond the arc, and most notably, 82.1 percent (23-28) to 53.7 percent (22-41) at the free throw line.

Senior guard Biko Johnson put up a game-high 22 points with a 10-of-16 clip at the charity stripe with four steals, three rebounds, and three assists. Chuol Deng was the only other Skyhawk to finish in double digits with 14 points while also grabbing four rebounds, a steal, blocking a shot, and handing out two assists before fouling out.
