Women's lacrosse opener goes to Purple Knight's

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team surrendered an 18-7 loss to Saint Michael's College in its season opener, picking up goals from five players and 11 saves from senior goalkeeper Caley Lay.

Saint Michael's earned its first win of the season to sit at 1-2 while Fort Lewis dropped to 0-1.

The Purple Knights had a 39-22 shot advantage, including a 30-16 edge in shots on goal. The teams even had 22 turnovers apiece, and Fort Lewis was limited to a 16-of-23 mark in clears. Saint Michael's owned an 18-11 lead in draw controls and both sides went 2-of-8 on free-position shots.

Junior Samantha Rodgers played a complete game with two goals, two ground balls, three caused turnovers, and four draws. Senior Phoebe Ramirez was the team's other multi-goal player with two. Freshman Jasmine Nguyen scored her first career goal while adding two ground balls. Sophomore Piper Price added one goal and the team's lone assist. Junior Sydney Tannaci tied for the team lead with four draws to go along with two ground balls and a goal. Lay played all but 40 seconds in goal and collected 11 saves.

The Purple Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead through four minutes by taking advantage of an early turnover and draw control. The next several minutes featured two saves from Lay to give the Skyhawks a chance to control their offensive third. Rodgers took advantage of a ground ball from sophomore Victoria Barletta to convert for the first goal of the season at the 6:54 mark. Saint Michael's went on to score four unanswered goals for a 7-1 lead heading into the final two minutes of the quarter. A failed clear attempt led to another Rodgers goal, and the Purple Knights netted one more to end the first with an 8-2 lead.

Ramirez quickly scored her first goal of the season to begin the second quarter, followed by a well-executed goal from Saint Michael's. Lay collected two more saves, but the constant pressure eventually led to two more goals and an 11-3 lead. Ramirez and Nguyen combined for two goals, including a woman-up goal from the freshman, to make it 11-5 with four minutes on the clock. Saint Michael's scored the final goal of the half with 1:28 to go to make it 12-5 at the break.

The third quarter saw three early turnovers that each led to scoring opportunities for Saint Michael's to extend the lead to 15-5. Lay caused a turnover later on, leading to a ground ball by Nguyen and a goal by Price to cut the difference to nine. The low-scoring quarter saw just one more goal following a yellow card called against Fort Lewis to send the teams to the fourth quarter in a 16-6 score.

An early penalty and turnover plagued the Skyhawks again, leading to two more goals for the Purple Knights through three minutes of the fourth quarter. The next three minutes featured three shots on goal by the Skyhawks and three saves for the Purple Knights' keeper. Tannaci tacked on the team's seventh goal of the afternoon on a free-position play, and the final minutes featured caused turnovers by freshman Ellie Clough and Nguyen, as well as a save from freshman Abigail Leighty to end the game.

Fort Lewis (0-1) will return to the field on Tuesday with an 11:00 a.m. game against Dominican University. Dominican is 2-0 after wins over Westminster (12-9) and Saint Michael's (17-8).
