Ryan scores 19 as comeback falls short against CSU Pueblo

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball nearly came back from down 20 points, trimming the difference to just two points in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling by a 66-61 final to CSU Pueblo.

Fort Lewis dropped to 6-19 overall and 3-14 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while CSU Pueblo improved to 16-9 on the year and 11-6 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field compared to a 38.3 percent (23-of-60) clip for the Pack. The teams were even with a 29.2 percent mark from three with seven makes. Rebounds were close as well with CSU Pueblo coming away with 44 versus 43 for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks committed 21 turnovers versus 17 for the Pack.

Junior Deniece Ryan led the team with 19 points, followed by senior Livia Knapp with nine. Senior Darla Hernandez added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Katie Lamb ranked second on the team with six rebounds and two steals. CSU Pueblo was led by Alisha Little who had 30 points and 16 rebounds.

The first quarter kicked off with five points from Ryan and a layup by sophomore Natalie Guanella to see a 7-3 lead. Hernandez made it a three-point advantage with a jumper before an 11-0 CSU Pueblo run gave the visitors a 17-9 lead. Ryan snapped the scoreless streak at the 2:31 mark with a layup, and a free throw by CSU Pueblo closed out the quarter in an 18-11 score.

The Pack built on their lead with the first seven points of the second quarter, and the Skyhawks responded with a pair of field goals from Ryan and sophomore Trista Hoobler to make it 25-15. CSU Pueblo enjoyed another scoring run to stretch the lead to 20 points with five minutes to go. Senior Evan Kingston drained a three-pointer at the 4:32 mark to get Fort Lewis back in the scoring column, and the teams ended the half going shot for shot, making it 41-24 at the buzzer.

Fort Lewis began chipping away thanks to solid defense that held CSU Pueblo to just four points through the first four minutes of the third quarter. Ryan sparked a run late in the quarter with a layup, followed by a three from Lamb to cut the difference to 13 points. The Skyhawks went to work at the free throw line and ended the third with a buzzer-beater by Ryan to trail 53-44.

Guanella made it a two-possession game thanks to a three-pointer with 8:10 on the clock, and Ryan pulled the team within five points on the following possession. The Pack answered with seven straight points to carry a 63-51 lead into the late half of the fourth quarter. The Skyhawks used a three by Lamb to kick start a run that featured four made free throws from Knapp to cut the difference to just two points. Fort Lewis had possession with 90 seconds remaining, but CSU Pueblo executed to earn the ball and end the game at the charity stripe.

Fort Lewis (6-19, 3-14 RMAC) will play its final home game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Colorado Christian University (8-16, 6-10 RMAC).
