Skyhawks fall in home finale, Kingston leads team with 13 points

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball suffered a pair of slow quarters to ultimately drop its final home game of the season by a 71-56 final to Colorado Christian University.

With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 6-20 overall and 3-15 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Cougars improved to 9-17, 7-11 RMAC.

Fort Lewis shot just 35.6 percent from the field compared to a 42.2 percent mark for Colorado Christian. Both teams made eight threes and combined for just 15 free throws. Colorado Christian outrebounded Fort Lewis 42-32 and took advantage of 14 turnovers. The Cougars earned 36 points in the paint versus 18 for the Skyhawks.

Senior Eva Kingston led the team with 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Senior Darla Hernandez followed with 10 points while leading the team with nine rebounds. Junior Deniece was the final player to reach double figures with 10 points.

Lamb was perfect from the perimeter through two minutes of the game to give her team a 6-2 lead at the 8:06 mark. The Cougars went on a three-minute scoreless streak after opening the game with points but finally snapped the stretch with two at the free throw line. Kingston added another three-pointer to give the Skyhawks nine points, and the Cougars responded with two more free throws for a 9-6 score. Fort Lewis extended the lead to six points thanks to drives from Ryan and Hernandez heading into the final two minutes of the quarter. Colorado Christian made one final field goal before the teams went scoreless for an extended stretch, making it 15-11 Fort Lewis at the buzzer.

Defense continued to dominate throughout the opening possessions of the second quarter with two more minutes passing without a bucket. Colorado Christian finally ended the drought with a jumper and tied the score at 15-15 with seven minutes on the clock. The Cougars took the lead on the following possession while the Skyhawks struggled amid a seven-point scoreless streak. Freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez finally got her team back in it offensively with a game-tying layup, but the Cougars entered a media timeout with five-straight points to see a 22-17 lead. Kingston pulled Fort Lewis back within a pair thanks to her second three-pointer in as many tries, and the senior went on to tie it at 22-all with 2:43 to go. Nicole Bowlin of Colorado Christian poured in five points while the visitors wrapped up the quarter on a tear to lead 29-22 at halftime.

Colorado Christian quickly extended its lead with an 8-0 scoring run before a driving layup from Knapp got Fort Lewis on the board. The difference stood at 14 points after four minutes of play, and Trista Hoobler started to chip away with a wide-open three for a 40-29 score. Hernandez converted her offensive rebound for two more points to cut the lead to nine points with 3:52 on the clock. Sophomore Natalie Guanella triggered a Colorado Christian timeout moments later after a steal led to a three-pointer and a 42-34 score. The scoring run for Fort Lewis reached nine points after four points by Hernandez got her team within four points. The teams traded layups to close out the third quarter in a 44-40 score.

Scoring came early and often in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, including five-straight scoring drives between the teams to see a 50-44 Colorado Christian lead. Colorado Christian turned up the heat and added separation thanks to an 11-2 scoring run with five minutes remaining. Two more points were added to the Cougars' score, and Hernandez finally got the Skyhawks in the scoring column with a jumper for a 61-48 score. Fort Lewis reached 50 points after a pair of foul shots by Kingston, and the senior provided more offense on the next possession with her third three-pointer of the afternoon. The deficit was too much to overcome, though, as the visitors outscored Fort Lewis by 11 points in the fourth quarter to claim a 71-56 win.

Fort Lewis ends the season on the road next week with games against Chadron State College (Feb. 27) and South Dakota Mines (March 1).
