Skyhawks down Cougars; punch ticket to 2025 RMAC Tournament

Fort Lewis clinches fifth-straight conference tournament appearance

DURANGO, Colo. – They were picked to finish ninth in the league's preseason head coaches poll. And in his first season at the helm, head coach Jordan Mast has led Fort Lewis (17-10, 11-7 RMAC) to its fifth consecutive appearance in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.

"I'm proud of these guys for putting together a year where we get to go compete and get to extend our season, that's special, especially on a senior night," head coach Jordan Mast commented. "I felt we were a bit lethargic to start, and maybe some of that is the senior night, but credit to our second half. We played some guys that hadn't been getting a lot of big minutes, and they gave us that energy push we needed to extend the lead and get the big win."

The Skyhawks sent out its three graduating seniors – Biko Johnson, Tru Allen, and Tristan Moore – with a 77-68 victory in what could be their final games inside of Whalen Gymnasium to complete the season sweep of Colorado Christian (11-15, 7-11 RMAC), and eliminate the Cougars from postseason contention and secure a spot in the 2025 RMAC Tournament.  Fort Lewis is currently locked in a tie for fourth place with Colorado Mesa (17-9, 11-7) and Black Hills State (15-11, 11-7), giving the Skyhawks the fifth-overall seed on a head-to-head win over BHSU and loss to CMU. With two home games left, a first-round home game in Durango remains mathematically possible.

While both sides saw three players finish in double figures, it was Johnson, a six-two product of King Drew High School, who went for a game-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting with a 3-of-6 clip from the three-point line. Johnson was aided by Tru Allen's 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Cassius Carmichael's 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

As a team, Fort Lewis edged Colorado Christian 50 percent (30-60) to 46.6 percent (27-58) shooting from the field but was out-rebounded 35-29. However, the Skyhawks narrowly won the turnover margin 16-10 with 10 steals for 22 points off turnovers. FLC continued to struggle at the free throw line where it shot 9-of-14 (64.3 percent).

Colorado Christian's Bradley Land just eclipsed his season average, scoring a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Jacob Everson poured in 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting, most notably thanks to a 3-of-9 mark from deep, while Shaylen Woodberry added another 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Four different Cougars surrendered three or more turnovers.
