Skyhawks drop twin bill to Orediggers

Mines wins sixth and seventh straight over Fort Lewis

GOLDEN, Colo. – Unable to drive in its 21 runners left on base, the Fort Lewis softball team (1-9, 0-5 RMAC) fell twice on Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-2 and 6-2 to Colorado School of Mines (4-12, 4-2 RMAC) to open the Skyhawks second-straight road series.

Despite the final score, Fort Lewis made strides at the plate compared to last weekend, finding 11 hits across the two games compared to eight total hits spanning three games last weekend. Senior third basemen Briana Jorgensen and redshirt freshman outfielder Makenna Milliman each had two singles games to open the day, with Jorgensen belting a double in game two to lead all Skyhawks with three hits on the afternoon.

Colorado School of Mines racked up 17 total hits on the day and took advantage of four FLC errors to plate 11 total runs despite stranding 11 more on base. Freshman outfielder Mia Lopez was the only Oredigger with two hits in game one, while Junior outfielder Kendall Aragon and senior catcher Kailey Morales each produced two hits in game two.

Mines 5, Fort Lewis 2
Fort Lewis never led in the opening game, and Colorado School of Mines took advantage of early mistakes and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Skyhawks left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning thanks to a single from McKenna Timmons following a lead-off walk from Cali Niccum. In the bottom of the second, Mines plated two on back-to-back singles. Later, in the bottom of the third, an error in left field allowed the Orediggers to add to its lead.

The Skyhawks offense finally found a rhythm in the top of the fifth inning. Milliman singled to open the frame and later came around to score on an error forced by a single from Alyssa Fockler. Natalie Rodman, who reached base on a hit-by-pitch, then scored on a single from Niccum. Senior first basemen Cassidy Chvatal then gave the Orediggers in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run, her fifth of the year.

Redshirt junior Taylor Wayne (3-2) went the distance for Mines in her fifth start of the year, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two hit-by-pitches against five strikeouts. Hailie Mann (0-4) was credited the loss surrendering five runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks while matching Wayne with five strikeouts.

Mines 6, Fort Lewis 2
Both squads exchanged empty opening frames, and it was Mines who struck first once again in the bottom of the third inning. The Skyhawks had a chance to score on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, but a strong throw from right field cut FLC down at home plate.

In the bottom of the third, Kellan Ton swiped home on a double steal to take the early lead, and a single two batters later, Aragon singled through the right side for the 2-0 lead. Sienna Mullin responded and broke the shutout in the top of the fourth, driving in Rodman on a single through the left side. Later in the fourth inning, the Orediggers strung together four singles and fielder's choice to double-up its lead over the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis cut into the deficit once more in the top of the fifth as Fockler singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and came around to score on Jorgen's double. However, CSM would score twice more thanks to a wild pitch and a single from Morales in the bottom of the inning.

Allison Westbrook (1-2) earned her first win of the year, tossing the first 4.1 innings of the game and allowing two earned runs of four hits and five walks. Kat Miller (0-5) came in on relief and threw the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and walking four. Amiee Shanks (0-3) was dealt the loss with six runs, three earned, 10 hits, two walks, and two strikeouts to her name.
