BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. – With two rounds remaining, the Fort Lewis College men's golf team will look to make up ground following a slow start to its spring championship season at the Battle in the Desert at the Rams Hill Golf Club.

The tournament, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino, features 12 teams across the west and south-central regions and features four ranked programs including No. 11 Georgia Southwestern, No. 27 UT Tyler, No. 28 Cal State Monterey Bay, and No. 31 Sonoma State.

No. 11 Georgia Southwestern has emerged as the early favorites in the tournament, taking control of first place with a dominant 15-under-par 273 through 18 holes. The Hurricanes are chased by second-place Cal State East Bay with a 278 (-10), and third-place UT Tyler with a 279 (-9).

Jay Shero, a member of the UT Tyler Eagles, leads the tournament overall with a two-stroke lead after carding a 64 (-8) that featured three eagles. Behind him is Cal State Monterey Bay's Simon Bjorken, who posted a bogey-free 66 (-6).

Fort Lewis finds itself in 11th place after round one, posting a 303 (+15) score as a team. The Skyhawks lead Vanguard (Calif.) by 15 strokes and reside 13 strokes back from the top half of the field. Junior Traejan Andrews, ranked 146th on SCOREBOARD, leads all Skyhawks in a tie for 28th. The Greeley, Colorado, native used four birdies and an eagle on hole 12 to finish one-over-par (73).

Seniors Jordan Jennings and Ronald Kildall III are right on Andrews' heels, however, with the pair finishing tied for 42nd with a pair of four-over-par 76s. Senior Jake Chesler follows closely behind by another two strokes, holding in a tie for 49th on a 78 (+6). Senior Tyler Tyson rounds off the pack just another stroke behind, sitting in a tie for 52nd with a 79 (+7).

The Skyhawks will play two more rounds to wrap up the tournament, with one each over the next two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 25-26.
