Men’s golf makes strides in round two

2/25/2025 7:09:00 PM

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. – Despite a slow start to its spring yesterday, the Fort Lewis men's golf team bounced back to post the largest single-round improvement of any team at the Battle in the Desert, cutting down twelve strokes on Tuesday afternoon to build momentum heading into Wednesday.

Yesterday, FLC finished 15 strokes above par with a 303, and today, the Skyhawks managed to make up plenty of ground by shaving off 12 strokes and posting a team score of 291 (+3). While Fort Lewis only managed to jump Cal State Dominguez Hills and move into tenth place after day two, the Skyhawks made the largest improvement of any team, giving them plenty of momentum heading into tomorrow's final round.

Fort Lewis now trails ninth-place Western New Mexico (+12) as well as No. 31 Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino, who are tied for seventh place at 585 (+9) each and sit 13 strokes back from No. 28 Cal State Monterey Bay (+5) and the top half of the field. Meanwhile, Stanislaus State went ten-under-par for the second round in a row to take the lead over No. 11 Georgia Southwestern State. The Warriors currently edge the Hurricanes 556 (-20) to 559 (-17). On the individual side, Stanislaus State's Jack Peters has been balanced with back-to-back 67s (-5) on the card to lead the field by two strokes with a 134 (-10).

No. 146 Traejan Andrews held steady as the front-runner for Fort Lewis, with the junior carding a 74 (+2) in his second trip through the course. Andrews adds to his 73 (+1) from round one to sit in a tie for 29th on a 147 (+3).

Seniors Ronald Kildall III and Jake Chesler are hot on Andrews' heels, however, as both Skyhawks reside in a tie for 33rd with a five-over-par 149. While Kildall III edged Chesler by two strokes in round one, Chesler managed a one-under 71 in his second round to come back even.

Seniors Jordan Jennings and Tyler Tyson round out the Skyhawks, residing in ties for 41st and 45th on a 151 (+7) and 152 (+8), respectively.

The Skyhawks will play one final round at Rams Hill Golf Club tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 26.
