2/26/2025 3:30:00 PM

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. – The Fort Lewis men's golf team did all it could on Wednesday afternoon, breaking par for the first time in 2025 after cutting down 12 strokes the day before, but it wasn't enough to overcome first-round struggles resulting in a tenth-place finish at the Battle In The Desert.

Hosted by Cal State San Bernardino, the tournament spanned 7,055 yards at Rams Hills Golf Club and featured an average score of 74.1 (+2.1) over the three rounds. No. 12 Georgia Southwestern State, who led in round one but trailed two strokes heading into today, recaptured its lead to win team medalist honors on a combined score of 834 (-30). The Hurricanes went 15-under-par in round one, then two-under in round two, and 13-under in the final round. Stanislaus State ended up trailing the tournament winners by four strokes with an 838 (-26).

As for individuals, it was a pair of Warriors from Stanislaus State that took home first place. Jack Peters, the front-runner after round two, held onto his top spot to tie teammate Christopher Chomyn for first. The duo carded a pair of 207s (-9). Chomyn also tied for the second-lowest round in the tournament with a 66 (-6) in round two.

Fort Lewis, ranked No. 70 on SCOREBOARD, held its tenth-place position on an 881 (+17) team score and was unable to jump No. 28 Sonoma State, who finished with an 878 (+14). In the end, it was the Skyhawks first-round 303 (+15) that did the most damage.

Junior Traejan Andrews, ranked No. 143 as an individual on SCOREBOARD, kept his title as the lead Skyhawk, climbing to a tie for 26th to close out the week. Andrews broke even with par in his final round to match Sonoma State's Cambron Nevill with a three-over-par 219.

Seniors Jake Chesler and Jordan Jennings weren't far behind, however, as they carded scores of 72 (E) and 71 (-1), respectively, to finish in ties for 29th and 31st. Chesler capped the tournament with a 221 (+1) and Jennings with a 222 (+6). Rounding out the Skyhawks was Tyler Tyson in a tie for 38th on a 224 (+8) and Ronald Kildall III in a tie for 46th on a 227 (+11).
