Softball headed into ThunderWolves den for weekend series

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis softball team (2-18, 1-14 RMAC) is heading back out on the road for the second time in as many weeks as the Skyhawks look to escape local inclement weather conditions and take on the ThunderWolves of CSU Pueblo (11-12, 10-6 RMAC) over at the Rawlings Softball Complex.
 
Life on the Road
Fort Lewis has played just one home series this season, totaling four games on the familiar dirt on Aspen Field. With 18 games on the road thus far, the Skyhawks will enter the series having spent four of its six weeks of the season on the road, and will also play its next two series on the road at Adams State (4-24, 2-14 RMAC) and New Mexico Highlands (8-18, 2-14 RMAC). Only two weekends in Durango remain in the 2025 campaign, including Colorado Mesa (14-8, 12-14 RMAC) on Apr. 5-6 and Black Hills State (15-9, 13-3 RMAC) on Apr. 18-19.
 
Pitching Paves the Way
Senior right-handed pitcher Amiee Shanks (0-5) leads the Skyhawks pitching staff with a team-best 4.01 earned run average (ERA) with four complete games and a team-high 50.2 innings pitched. With Shanks at the helm, Fort Lewis enters the weekend with the sixth-best ERA as a staff at 4.45. Junior Hailie Mann (0-8) is next up with a 4.68 ERA on 49.1 innings pitched, while the freshmen duo of Chloe Padilla (1-3) and Addison Gavigan (1-2), who own the Skyhawks lone two victories in the circle, trail closely behind with 4.58 and 4.87 ERAs, respectively.
 
Leading Bats
Briana Jorgensen, the Skyhawks senior third baseman out of Casa Grande, Ariz., has continued to pace the offense all season long, boasting a team-best .345 batting average. Jorgensen has totaled 19 hits, including four doubles and two home runs, for nine runs batted in (RB). Freshman catcher Alyssa Fockler, redshirt freshman Makenna Milliman, and sophomore infielder Natalie Rodman are the only other players to reach double-digit hits with 14, 11, and 10, respectively. As a team, Fort Lewis is batting .205 with a .274 slugging and .290 on-base percentage.
 
Scouting The Pack
CSU Pueblo is coming off of back-to-back 3-1 series wins over Adams State and Regis (8-17, 7-9 RMAC) at home. The ThunderWolves took three games from the Grizzlies by way of the run-rule, outscoring Adams State 33-10, and just one by way of the run-rule against Regis, outscoring the Rangers 27-16.
 
Junior right-handed pitcher McKenna James (6-5) leads The Pack pitching staff with a 2.51 ERA, one shutout, and eight complete games over 68.0 innings pitched. In addition, James has struck out 53 batters against 15 walks. Freshman Mia Sanchez (4-3) has totaled a second-best 5.29 ERA over 47.2. CSU Pueblo carries a 4.93 ERA as a pitching staff with a .290 opponents' average.
 
Four members of The Pack boast a .400+ average, and junior Madelyn Huerta leads the team with a .450 average backed by 27 hits, 22 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. Huerta also leads all ThunderWolves with a .717 slugging percentage on five doubles, three home runs, and one triple. Junior Taylor Brown supplies a .422 average, junior Darleen Falcbon a .419 average, and junior Caitlyn Cole the final .411 average. As a team, CSU Pueblo is batting .313 with a .417 slugging percentage and a .396 on-base percentage.
 
Up Next
Fort Lewis will make its shortest trip of the season next weekend, heading over Wolf Creek Pass to take on Adams State next door in Alamosa, Colo. The Skyhawks and Grizzlies are set for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 22-23, at the ASU Softball Field.
