#17 Regis captures win over Fort Lewis in Sunday matinee

DURANGO, Colo. – Aided by goals from 10 different players, No. 17 Regis University stole a win from the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team to wrap up the weekend at home.

Fort Lewis fell to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play while Regis improved to 5-4, 3-1 RMAC.

The Skyhawks were outshot 40-16 with a 34-11 differential in shots on goal. Fort Lewis committed 23 turnovers while going 11-of-20 on clear attempts. The teams were even with 19 ground balls apiece, and Regis earned a 16-7 edge in draw controls.

Fort Lewis earned goals from senior Diamond Velasco, sophomore Piper Price, and freshman Maddie Thompson. Junior Samantha Rodgers led the way with three draws and a pair of caused turnovers. Starting goalkeeper Caley Lay recorded four ground balls and seven saves while freshman Abigail Leighty snagged 10 saves in the second half.

It took just 30 seconds for the Rangers to net their first goal of the afternoon, and they went on to add four more to carry a 5-0 lead into the second quarter. The Skyhawks held them scoreless for the first two minutes of the second quarter before a yellow card allowed for woman-up play. Regis took advantage and quickly scored its sixth goal, followed by a seventh moments later. Velasco got Fort Lewis on the board at the 8:28 mark, but the Skyhawks entered halftime trailing 11-1.

Regis tacked on three more goals through three minutes of the third quarter, followed by a goal from Price that came off a failed clear for Regis. Leighty would then compile six saves to run the clock out on the third quarter with the score sitting at 14-2. The freshman saved the first shot that she saw in the fourth quarter but allowed a goal on a woman-up chance with under 12 minutes to go. Rodgers won the next draw, leading to a goal from Thompson for a 15-3 difference. Regis went on to score two more goals to hold a 17-3 lead as the horn sounded.

Fort Lewis (1-8, 0-3 RMAC) begins a four-game road stand next week with games at Westminster University and Colorado Mesa University. Friday's game in Salt Lake City begins at 4:00 p.m. while Sunday's contest versus the Mavericks opens at 1:00 p.m.
