Men’s basketball season comes to a close in RMAC semifinals

Deng dominates the glass for his ninth double-double

GOLDEN, Colo. – The sixth-seeded Fort Lewis men's basketball team fell 69-62 to second-seeded Regis on Friday night, closing the curtain on the Skyhawks 2024-25 season in the semifinals of the 2025 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament up in Lockridge Arena.
 
Fort Lewis caps the season with a 19-12 overall record and 12-8 mark in conference play. Regis climbs to 18-12 overall and into the RMAC Tournament title game against the winner of top-seeded and No. 9/9 Colorado School of Mines and fifth-seeded Black Hills State.
 

The Skyhawks never led in the game, surrendering the opening basket to the Rangers, who went on to shoot 45.9 percent (28-61) for the contest while holding FLC to 33.3 percent (21-63) shooting from the field and 28.6 percent shooting (8-28) from beyond the arc. Fort Lewis edged Regis 42-38 off the glass, but the Rangers took advantage of transition and open space, out-scoring the Skyhawks 42-to-26 on points in the paint with 17 assists.
 
Senior Chuol Deng had a monster night for the Skyhawks as the six-foot-seven forward posted a 16-point, 21-rebound double-double on 6-of-13 shooting with two assists and a steal. Deng's 21 rebounds are tied for the eighth-most by a Division II player this season and stand as the third-most in program history.
 
As for the Rangers, sophomore Olafur Styrmisson went for a career-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting with a 4-of-6 clip from deep, including four of Regis' first five scores with three-straight treys to secure an early 14-6 advantage. The six-foot-seven forward finished with a career-high seven rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block.
 
Senior guard Biko Johnson led Fort Lewis in scoring with 17 points on 5-of-15 shooting with four rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Freshman AJ Riggs was the only other Skyhawk in double figures with 10 points on a 2-of-3 night from beyond the arc and 4-of-5 shooting at the free throw line. Jalen Brown and Trey Bryant scored 13 points and 10 points, respectively, to round out the Rangers in double figures.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis finishes the 2024-25 season as the sixth seed in the 2025 RMAC Tournament after the Skyhawks were voted to finish ninth in the preseason coaches' poll.
-The Skyhawks lead the Rangers 47-39 all-time, but Regis picks up its second-straight win over Fort Lewis and ties the series at 3-3 in the RMAC Tournament. In addition, Regis won the first-ever meeting between the two teams in the semifinals.
-First-year head coach Jordan Mast and staff led the Skyhawks to a 19-12 overall record and 12-8 mark in RMAC play. Mast ties Jim Cross (1988-1998) for the second-most wins by a Skyhawks head coach in their first season.
-Chuol Deng recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 16 points and 21 rebounds. Deng's 21 rebounds are tied for the eighth-most in a DII game this season and are the third-most in program history since Rick Clark (1971-75) hauled in 26 and 25 back in the 1972 and 1974 seasons, respectively.
-Biko Johnson and AJ Riggs finished in double figures for their 26th and seventh times, respectively.
