Women's lacrosse loses conference opener

PUEBLO, Colo. – After being outscored 12-1 in the second half of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opener, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team lost a 21-8 contest to CSU Pueblo.

Fort Lewis was outshot 36-31 in the game, including a 31-28 difference in shots on goal. The Skyhawks were called for 23 fouls which allowed 16 free position shots for the Pack. Fort Lewis had a 10-8 advantage in caused turnovers.

Senior Phoebe Ramirez, sophomore Victoria Barletta, and freshman Jasmine Nguyen each scored two goals. Sophomore Piper Price led the team with a pair of assists. Junior Samantha Rodgers earned seven draw controls to go along with three ground balls and a goal. Three goalkeepers saw time between the pipes with senior Caley Lay picking up six saves to lead the way.

Fort Lewis registered the game's first shot, resulting in a save for CSU Pueblo. The Pack responded with three-straight goals to take a lead after five minutes. Piper Price gave her team favorable field position with a caused turnover that led to the Skyhawks' first goal off the stick of Ramirez. The Pack added two more goals before another caused turnover, this one by Zoi Delgado, leading to a goal from Nguyen. Sydney Tannaci scored the team's third goal of the quarter and CSU Pueblo added one more before two minutes of scoreless play sent the teams into the second quarter in a 6-3 score.

Ramirez pulled her team within two goals at the 13-minute mark of the second quarter, and Nguyen made it a one-goal game moments later following Samantha Rodgers's draw. Rodgers won the next draw, and the Skyhawks drew a foul to give Victoria Barletta a game-tying free-position goal. The next two minutes saw three saves by Caley Lay before two goals by CSU Pueblo allowed the home team to take an 8-6 lead. The Pack reached nine goals thanks for a free position goal, and Rodgers answered with a goal to make it 9-7. The Skyhawks placed the final shot on goal of the half that resulted in CSU Pueblo's ninth save of the game.

Barletta added her second goal of the game after winning the opening draw to make it 9-8, followed by a caused turnover and goal by the Pack to give them double-digit goals. The teams played lock down defense for the next four minutes before CSU Pueblo snapped the streak with another. The Skyhawks continued to test the opposing keeper with four free position shots that turned into saves for the Pack. The third quarter ended in a 14-8 lead for CSU Pueblo despite Fort Lewis outshooting them 11-7.

The Pack continued to pour on the goals with two quick scores early in the fourth quarter. The Fort Lewis defense had a stretch of nearly four minutes where it held CSU Pueblo without a goal, but that came to an end at the 9:41 mark when the Pack got one past Abigail Leighty for a 17-8 lead. The Pack kept rolling and tacked on three more goals to carry a 20-8 lead into the final three minutes. They scored once both in the last minute of play to end the game in a 21-8 final.

The remainder of the nonconference schedule features road games against William Jewell College (Mar. 12), Quincy University (Mar. 14), and Rockhurst University (Mar. 17).
