Turnovers, penalties stymie Skyhawks in season opener

Jones, Johnson rush for a pair of scores

DURANGO, Colo. –  William Jewell was out-gained on offense, forced to punt on five occasions, and went 1-for-11 on third down, but still flew out of Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon with a 34-14 victory in the 2025 season opener over Fort Lewis up on the rim.

The Cardinals dominated the line of scrimmage, bursting through for six sacks, each by a different player, that combined for 34 total yards, while also punching out and recovering four fumbles across the afternoon, including a pair of recoveries for redshirt freshman linebacker Sonny Proctor, who finished with two tackles and a pass breakup. William Jewell held the home squad to 2-of-11 on first down, and benefited from 111 yards and five first downs on Skyhawks penalties.

Fort Lewis was not without its own opportunities, however, as safeties Kalib Davis and Elijah Portela each brought down interceptions just eight plays apart in the third quarter, leading to a seven-yard rushing touchdown for redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Jones, which pulled FLC back into a two-score game, 24-14 Jones was impressive in his first true showing, throwing for 28 yards on 4-of-6 passing while also rushing for 32 net yards and a touchdown across seven carries on the ground.

Jamal Johnson led the Skyhawks' ground attack, picking up 68 yards and the second touchdown of his career on twelve attempts. Jake Penney, who finished fifth in Division II with 122 total tackles last season, picked up right where he left off with 14 total tackles, including 10 solo stops. Samuel Ballas finished second on the squad with six tackles, featuring five solo tackles, and led the roster with 1.5 tackles for a combined two yards lost.

Jake Shaffer was the only Cardinal under center, tossing three touchdowns, two interceptions, and 204 yards on 15 completions in 29 attempts. Nate Barrnett was Shaffer's go-to target with 66 yards and two touchdowns on just four receptions. Yasir Winston added one touchdown and 35 yards on a pair of catches as well. MicahJo Bennet was a workhorse for WJC, grinding out 58 net yards and one touchdown on 25 rushing attempts.

Fort Lewis led over in total offense, 304 yards to 283, rushing yards 117 yards to 79, edged William Jewel 17-to-16 in first downs, and landed two punts inside of the Cardinals' 20-yard line, alongside four fair catches thanks to Kuba Betlinski. Betlinski was also a perfect two-for-two in points after attempts. The Skyhawks only trailed in time of possession, 32:35 to 27:25, and passing yards, 204 to 187.

Notes
-Fort Lewis remains winless in its season opener for the 13th consecutive season, dating back to 2012.
-The Skyhawks trail the Cardinals 3-0 all-time, including 2-0 on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
-Jake Penney recorded 14 total tackles to mark his 10th career game with 10 or more tackles, and the second of his career with 10 or more solo tackles. In addition, Penney nearly single-handedly stalled out a William Jewell drive in the fourth quarter, making two solo tackles and an assisted tackle in succession to force a three-and-out.
-Kalib Davis and Elijah Portela hauled in their sixth and first career interceptions, respectively. Portela also finished two tackles shy of his career-high (seven).
-Jake Jones tied his career-high with seven rushing attempts, and set new career highs in rushing yards (32), longest rush (21 yards), rushing touchdowns (one), passing attempts (four), completions (six), completion percentage (66.7 percent), and passing yards (28).

Up Next
Fort Lewis will cap its non-conference schedule on the road next Saturday, Sept. 6, as the Skyhawks challenge the Firestorm of Arizona Christian under the lights of Phoenix, Ariz., at 8 p.m. on the ACU Football Field.
