No. 9 Skyhawks remain unbeaten, draw with No. 17 Rattlers

Andreottola strikes for his third goal in as many matches

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 9 nationally ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer (1-0-2) capped its trip to the Lone Star State on a sweltering Saturday afternoon with another come-from-behind draw on Sigma Beta Chi Field against No. 17 St. Mary's (1-0-2).

The Skyhawks found themselves off to yet another slow start, allowing the Rattlers to control possession in the early going and force them back into their defensive third. The press, which fired off eight shots in the first half, finally broke through in the 24th minute when St. Mary's drove down the far sideline and into the penalty box, before a slight pass toward center gave Ryan Guillaume enough space to fire a rocket into the top-right corner of the goal.

St. Mary's came out of halftime comfortable with its one-goal lead, allowing Fort Lewis to pounce on possession and have its hand at forcing the Rattlers into its own defensive third. The Skyhawks would fire off 12 total shots in the second half against STMU's two, while also taking a pair of corner kicks.

In the 67th minute, the Rattlers took possession of the ball on the far side and looked to swing it across to the near side; however, Alessio Andreottola made a clean tackle 35 yards out, giving the freshman from Colmar, France, nothing but green grass ahead. A Rattlers defender met Andreottola inside the box nearly 10 yards out, but Andreottola made a flick to his left before netting the equalizer back across the box inside the right post.

Fort Lewis, despite holding the slight edge in total possession 51 percent to 49 percent, gave St. Mary's plenty of chances with 17 fouls to the Rattlers' eight. Lucas Martin matched his season-high from Thursday night with five saves. STMU's Johnny Thurbin made a pair of saves while surrendering his first goal of the season.
