No. 9 Fort Lewis finally bests Simon Fraser, 2-1

Andreottola stays hot, Stracher nets first goal of 2025

DURANGO, Colo. – After four long years and three unfavorable results, the No. 9 nationally ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (2-0-2) finally earned the program's first win over Simon Fraser University (0-3-2), 2-1, Thursday night under the lights of a rowdy Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks extend their unbeaten streak to four matches to open the 2025 campaign, and remain 2-0-0 at home on the grass of Dirks Field. In addition, the Skyhawks earn their first win against the Red Leafs, bringing the series to 1-2-1 all-time in favor of SFU.

Fort Lewis' offense has stayed hot, and possibly found its footing, striking for a 2-0 lead before finally conceding on a defensive miscue late in the match. The Skyhawks fired off 18 total shots, placing eight on frame, while limiting the Red Leafs to eight shots, with four shots on goal. Junior Lucas Martin recorded two saves against Jordan Thorsen's five.

Simon Fraser nearly claimed an advantage in the early going, as Francesco Troisi dispossessed the Skyhawks' goalkeeper on an errant pass, leaving nothing but an open net ahead. However, Mathias Valverde, making his first start, made a timely sliding save to keep the Red Leafs scoreless.

In the 20th minute, after a steady rotation of possession at midfield, Fort Lewis began its attack down the far sideline. Casey Stracher took service near the sideline and drove towards the box, making a give-and-go pass with Alessio Andreottola just inside the penalty area, allowing Stracher to find the open space between three defenders at the penalty line and use the slight flick of his right foot to dribble his first goal of the season just inside the left post.

The 1-0 lead lasted just 8:54 seconds, and like a moth to a flame, Andreottola struck yet again, this time for the first game-winning goal of his career. A slick touch gave Andreottola possession near midfield, and the freshman bolted down the far sideline before sending service forward to a sprinting Francisco Pinto. Pinto pulled out a pair of defenders before sending service back into the middle of the box, where a sprinting Andreottola needed just one touch of his left foot to squeeze the ball between the diving keeper and the near-side right-post for his fourth goal of the season.

Troisi and the Red Leafs avoided the shutout in the final minutes after finally cracking the Skyhawks' back line in the 81st minute. Troisi managed to get a foot on a short pass just outside of the penalty area, forcing Fort Lewis to battle for possession. While a Skyhawks tackle slowed one opportunity for SFU, it created another for Troisi, who kept tracking and rifled the loose ball from the top-right corner of the box inside the top-left corner of the goal.
