Women's soccer drops heartbreaker to No. 9 Orediggers after late PK

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team surrendered a penalty kick goal in the final 30 seconds of Sunday's match to drop a 1-0 conference match to No. 9 Colorado School of Mines.

Fort Lewis dropped to 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Mines improved to 4-1-1, 1-0 RMAC.
Fort Lewis held a 17-11 advantage in shots with a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Mines earned seven corner kicks compared to five for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks were whistled for 11 fouls and drew a pair of yellow cards.

Junior Amber Otts tied for the team lead with three shots and two shots on goal while playing 90 minutes. Junior Jenna Salazar added two shots on goal, and three additional players placed shots on target. Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan had a quality match with several important reads despite not registering a save.

Senior Anna Tucker had the first shot of the match for Fort Lewis with an attempt that tailed wide, followed by a shot for Mines in the ninth minute that was blocked by the Skyhawks defense. The Orediggers earned their first corner kick of the afternoon in the 13th minute which was batted away by Lujan in goal to preserve the score.

The Skyhawks lined up for a free kick just inside the midfield line, sending a powerful cross off the foot of fifth year Danielle Gonzales into the box. Senior Abigail Nkrumah battled three defenders in the air, looking for a header, but the Orediggers got there first and earned a clear. Otts followed with a shot on goal in the 18th minute, the first of the match, to test Allie Lundgren in goal.

Fort Lewis continued to hold the majority of possession in the half and picked up two more off-target shots as the teams played into the final five minutes of the opener. Lujan sent the teams into the halftime break with a 0-0 score thanks to late reads on set-piece shots. The Skyhawks had a 5-4 edge in shots during the first half, and both teams picked up one shot on goal.

The Orediggers looked to have a chance for a one-on-one shot on goal when a through ball found the foot of the crashing forward. The Skyhawks' defense caught up to the Mines player to provide pressure, and Lujan vacated her position in goal to jump on the ball before a shot could rattle off. The teams turned defense into offense midway through the half with three shots on goal for Fort Lewis and blocked shots for Mines holding the score at 0-0.

Freshman Molly Widmark had a good look in the 74th minute with a sharp shot on the that was destined to sneak inside the left post, but another quality read by the opposing goalkeeper thwarted the chance. Mines drew a yellow card in the 78th minute inside the attacking third, but the header forward drifted wide-right for a goal kick.

Lujan made another key read with eight minutes to go, vacating her spot the charge the ensuing pass and punching it out just ahead of the Mines forward. The teams played stout defense in the final 10 minute, and the match appeared to be heading toward a scoreless draw, but the Orediggers had other plans. Mines drew a foul in the final 30 seconds and placed a penalty kick goal high-left to ultimately claim the contest by a 1-0 final.

Skyhawks face No. 12 Colorado Mesa University on Friday, October 3 at 4:30 PM. Fort Lewis wraps up the homestand on Sunday at noon against (RV) Westminster University.
