Women's soccer opens season with draw

DURANGO, Colo. – The Skyhawks women's soccer team opened its 2025 season under the lights at Dirks Field with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against St. Mary's University on Thursday night.

Fort Lewis held a slight edge in shots, 16–15, while the Rattlers placed five on goal compared to four for the Skyhawks. FLC earned eight corner kicks, and St. Mary's was whistled for 10 fouls and four yellow cards.

Freshman goalkeeper Trinity Lujan shined in her collegiate debut, recording five saves in a complete-game shutout. She was backed by a strong defensive unit, with juniors Amber Otts and Ann Spence, senior Josie Coulter, and fifth-year Danielle Gonzales each playing the full 90 minutes. On the offensive end, senior Rozlin Gomez led the team with two shots on goal, while senior Anna Tucker and Otts added one apiece.

The Skyhawks showed promise early, as junior Jenna Salazar fired two shots that sailed high before Otts forced the first save of the match in the 10th minute. Lujan's first collegiate stop came in the 21st minute, denying a free-kick chance from SMU's Marily Garza Contreras.

Freshmen Molly Widmark and Isla Witham made their first appearances late in the opening half. The Rattlers nearly broke through just before halftime when All-American Shelby Paniagua struck a free kick off the woodwork after a Skyhawks yellow card.

The second half saw another yellow card against St. Mary's, giving Spence a free-kick look that went wide. Lujan added two more saves in the 54th minute to keep the score level. Gomez entered in the 71st and quickly tested the keeper with a shot on target, but the Rattlers held firm.

St. Mary's pressed late with a series of off-target attempts and two additional yellow cards. The Skyhawks responded with late chances of their own, including two shots from freshman Addyson Carpentier and on-target efforts by Tucker and Gomez in the final minutes. St. Mary's earned one last set piece in the final seconds, but the FLC defense cleared the ball away to secure the draw.

Fort Lewis (0-0-1) returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. in Grand Junction, facing St. Edward's University in a neutral-site match. The Hilltoppers are coming off a loss to No. 22 Colorado Mesa earlier Thursday at Community Health Field.
