Florence sinks game-winner, Skyhawks pull off stunning upset over No. 15 Yellow Jackets

Curry, Florence rise to the moment in final seconds

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Trey Curry knocked down two free throws with 1.4 seconds left on the clock, the Skyhawks were handed an unforced turnover on the inbounds play, and Keither Florence sank the game-winning layup before the buzzer to give Fort Lewis men's basketball a stunning 78-76 come-from-behind Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory on the road over No. 15 nationally ranked Black Hills State University.

The Skyhawks (10-5, 8-0 RMAC) were outshot in every category, overcame a 13-point halftime deficit, trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half, but held the Yellow Jackets (13-3, 6-2 RMAC) to zero made field goals in the final 5:34 seconds, and erupted for 51 second-half points to storm back and earn its fifth-straight win, second top-25 win of the campaign, and take a two-game lead in the race for the RMAC regular season title.

Fort Lewis lost the turnover battle, 17-to-15, but picked up 10 steals for 16 points off turnovers against Black Hills State's five steals for 19 points off turnovers. The Skyhawks' dominance off the glass was evident, winning the rebound battle 46-to-36 while racking up 12 second-chance points and 34 points in the paint. In addition, FLC

FLC shot 38.8 percent (26-67) on the afternoon with an 18.2 percent (2-11) mark from the three-point line. Black Hills State was 43.4 percent (23-53) from the floor and 26.7 percent (8-30) from deep. Despite the Yellow Jackets edging the Skyhawks 75.9 percent (22-29) to 66.7 percent (24-36) at the free throw line, BHSU went 9-for-15 at the line in the final five minutes of action.

Stewart Erhart stayed hot, scoring a team-high 20 points on 7-of-19 shooting with a team-high seven rebounds, two steals, and one assist before fouling out for the first time in his career with a tie score and 44 seconds remaining. Jaxon Smith scored 11 of his 15 total points in the second half with a pair of momentum-killing three-pointers. Florence, who scored the game-winning layup without a defender between him and the basket thanks to a screen at the elbow, tied his season-high with 15 points while also grabbing six boards in just 16 minutes on the floor. Trey Curry, in a similar fashion to Erhart on Thursday, finished in double figures for the first time in his career with 12 second-half points, four rebounds, a steal, and an assist.

Reigning RMAC Freshman of the Year Cam Lowe led Black Hills State with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a 4-of-8 clip from deep and a 7-of-10 mark at the charity stripe, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Myles Johnson added 14 points and a team-high eight boards, and Jaeton Hackley added another 10 points to round out the Yellow Jackets in double figures.
