Fort Lewis cruises past Colorado Christian on Carmichael’s historic defensive effort

Carmichael shatters program record, ties 29-year RMAC single-game steals record

DURANGO, Colo. – Scoring can be skill, rebounding can be size, but steals? Effort, drive, and determination.

Senior forward Cassius Carmichael put all three traits on display Thursday night inside a rambunctious Whalen Gymnasium, tying Adam State University's Mike Reynolds' 29-year-old Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference single-game record with 11 steals en route to powering Fort Lewis men's basketball past Colorado Christian University, 73-56.

The Skyhawks moved to 11-5 overall and remain unbeaten at 9-0 in conference action on the strength of 24 steals, the third-most in a game in program history, on 28 forced turnovers for 27 points off turnovers. Colorado Christian, despite outrebounding Fort Lewis 48-29, fell to 7-10 overall and 2-7 in RMAC play.

Carmichael not only passed Shane Berry and Jeff Norton's (1983-87) previous record of nine steals, set in 1996 and 1986, respectively, but also bested his own career mark of seven steals set 12 days ago against Westminster (Jan. 10). Barring other results from around the country tonight, his 11 steals are the most by any player in Division I or Division II, and the second-most by any player across the NCAA this year. Carmichael finished the night with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting, four rebounds, and an assist with no turnovers, and has vaulted to second in the RMAC with 2.9 steals per game.

Fort Lewis opened the contest with a 10-point unanswered lead, ultimately shooting 39.7 (23-58) from the floor for the night to lead the Cougars by as many as 21 points, and no fewer than six points, for its seventh-consecutive win over Colorado Christian. The Skyhawks hit at just 30.4 percent (7-23) from the three-point line and 64.5 percent (20-31) at the free throw line.

Jaxon Smith led all players with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, but most notably, a 4-of-9 mark from deep and a perfect 4-for-4 mark at the free throw line. Smith has made 31 consecutive free throws dating back to Dec. 16, had a previous streak of 28 consecutive free throws this year, and ranks third in Division II with a 94.2 percent free-throw percentage. Stewart Erhart was the only other Skyhawk in double figures with 12 points on an 8-of-10 night at the free throw line, five steals, five assists, and four rebounds.

Joshua Reid was the only Cougar in double figures, scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting with six rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in 17 minutes. Porter Bazil led all players with ten rebounds while supplying another seven points, two assists, and two blocks. Colorado Christian shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field, 28.6 percent (8-28) from deep, and 66.7 percent (6-9) at the line.

His 11 steals are the most by any player in DI or DII this year, and the second-most in all of the NCAA this season. Additionally, he breaks Shane Berry and Jeff Norton's previous record of nine steals, set back on Jan. 29, 1996, against American Indian Bible College, and Dec. 6, 1986, against Southern Nazarene University, respectively.
-Fort Lewis' 24 steals are the third-most in a game in program history, and mark the third time under head coach Jordan Mast that the Skyhawks have had 20+ steals through Mast's 47 games at the helm of the program.
-Jaxon Smith and Stewart Erhart were the only Skyhawks in double figures with 18 points and 12 points, respectfully. Erhart also led the team with five assists, while Chuol Deng led the roster with five rebounds.
