Skyhawks fend off Mountain Lions in high-octane affair

Fort Lewis climbs to 10-0 in RMAC standings

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis' resilience, grit, and determination was on full display Saturday afternoon in Whalen Gymnasium as the Skyhawks men's basketball team overcame a gutsy University of Colorado Colorado Springs (10-8, 5-5 RMAC), 90-84, on the strength of 20-point outings from Jaxon Smith and Chuol Deng to move up to 12-5 overall and 10-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Deng scored 18 of his season-high 25 points in the first half, keeping Fort Lewis within striking distance of UCCS, and ultimately battling to a 45-45 stalemate at halftime. Deng finished with eight rebounds and a block. While both teams boasted sub-50 percent shooting in the opening minutes, the Skyhawks capped the night at 44.6 percent (29-65) shooting from the floor to the Mountain Lions 39.1 percent (27-69), and held a 33.3 percent (6-18) to 21.2 percent (7-33) advantage from deep.

Free throw shooting proved pivotal in today's bout, and despite UCCS edging Fort Lewis 71.9 percent (23-32) to 66.7 percent (26-39), the Skyhawks earned seven more attempts and went 9-for-12 down the stretch to pull away late en route to the victory.

Stewart Erhart overcame a slow start to score 18 points on 5-of-20 shooting with a 7-for-8 night at the free throw line while grabbing three rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Erhart came up big in the final moments, going 5-for-6 at the line in the final five minutes, also hitting a wide-open trey with 2:54 left to put FLC out in front, 82-77.

Smith showed out for the Skyhawks across his 36 minutes on the floor, pouring in 23 points of his own on 7-of-11 shooting with marks of 4-of-8 from deep and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. Before his miss, Smith had knocked down 34 consecutive free throws since Dec. 16. It was the second time this season that Smith had made 28 or more free throws in a row, and the second time two Skyhawks had gone for 20+ points in a game.

UCCS' Mario Williams Jr. scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting with a perfect 6-for-6 night at the free throw line. Marzouq Abdur-Razaaq added his third double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Xavier Martinez and Brody Hull supplied another 11 points and 10 points, respectively, to round out the Mountain Lions in double figures.
