Skyhawks fend off Orediggers down the stretch, post 78-70 RMAC win

Fort Lewis moves to 11-0 in RMAC

DURANGO, Colo. – A 17-point second-half lead and the rowdiest home crowd of the season proved pivotal for the Fort Lewis men's basketball team Thursday night as the Skyhawks held off a late eruption by the Colorado School of Mines offense to down the Orediggers 78-70 and move to 13-5 overall and 11-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Colorado School of Mines (11-11, 7-4 RMAC) threw the first punch, jumping out to an early eight-point lead, its largest of the game, on a three-pointer on the right wing from Shelton Henton at the 15:13 mark. Fort Lewis responded in tow, scoring 11 points unanswered to flip the final lead change of the night in favor of the Skyhawks, 18-15.

Fort Lewis finished the night a combined 43.3 percent (29-67) from the field, using its success in the low post, where the Skyhawks racked up 48 points in the paint, to work the outside and take its largest lead of the night, 58-41, with 15:34 left to play on a Jaxon Smith trey just in front of the student section. Colorado School of Mines had other plans, however, with Orediggers clawing back possession by possession to knot the game up at 68-68 with 4:15 left to play, thanks to a triple from Kasen Lehman.

Down the final stretch, Fort Lewis forced two of Mines' 18 turnovers for the night, while also going 2-for-4 from the field and getting six-straight free throws from Stewart Erhart to close out the contest. Erhart's perfect 8-for-8 night at the charity stripe led FLC to a season second-best 84.2 percent (16-19) performance at the free throw line. Erhart matched Massal Diouf with a team-high 15 points, with Smith pouring in another 12 points to cap the three Skyhawks in double figures. Donald Bangham, Jr. tied his career-high with a game-high four steals.

Colorado School of Mines boasted two double-double performances, including a 17-point, 10-rebound effort from Jonathan Moore and a 16-point, 10-rebound outing from Alex Romack. Henton was the only other Oredigger in double figures with 12 points on a 4-for-8 night beyond the arc. Trent Minter led all players with five assists.
