Mountaineers upend Skyhawks women's basketball at home

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's basketball dropped its first game of the New Year on Thursday in a 78-61 final versus Western Colorado University in Whalen Gymnasium.

With the loss, Fort Lewis College dropped to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Western Colorado improved to 6-5 on the year and 4-1 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 34.8 percent from the field, 18.2 percent from three, and 50 percent from the stripe. Western Colorado was 39.6 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three, and 73.7 from the stripe with 28 made free throws. The Mountaineers owned a 49-29 advantage in rebounds while the Skyhawks came away with 12 steals and forced 20 turnovers.

Sophomore Katie Lamb led the team with 11 points to go along with seven rebounds, followed by the trio of junior Natalie Guanella, sophomore Claudia Palacio Gámez, and freshman Alemaualii Fonoti with nine points each. Western Colorado was led by Ivey Schmidt's 25-point, eight-rebound performance.

Fort Lewis (9-4, 2-3 RMAC) returns to the hardwood in Whalen Gymnasium on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Westminster University (3-8, 0-5 RMAC). The Griffins are coming off a 76-64 loss to Adams State University tonight in Alamosa.
