Skyhawks defense clamps Hardrockers for 87-67 rout on senior day

Fort Lewis clinches home game in first round of 2026 RMAC Tournament

DURANGO, Colo. – It just means more on senior day, and the Fort Lewis men's basketball team proved just that, shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from downtown with added production in 34 points off the bench to lead South Dakota Mines from the opening tip-off and claim an 87-67 win and the program's eight-straight victory over the Hardrockers as well as clinch a first-round home game in the upcoming 2026 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
 
Fort Lewis (16-9, 14-4 RMAC) saw five players reach double-figures as the Skyhawks dished out 18 assists, good to match its fourth-most in production this season. Cassius Carmichael handed out a team-high four assists, while nine different Skyhawks picked up at least one. Chuol Deng led all players with a game-high 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds, picking up one block and assist across the afternoon as well.
 
The Skyhawks defense limited the Hardrockers (9-17, 6-12 RMAC) production from the field once more, holding the opposition to 37.1 percent shooting (23-62) overall and a 27 percent (10-37) clip from deep, both marks coming in lower than in the two teams' first meeting. Massal Diouf played a key role in the post, holding SDM to just 24 points in the paint and 12 second-chance points while hauling in seven rebounds and blocking three shots.
 
Jaxon Smith paced the Fort Lewis bench with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with Stewart Erhart and Donald Bangham, Jr. pouring in another 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Erhart tied Trey Curry for a game-high three steals.
 
Four Hardrockers scored in double figures, including 15 points from Fred Libby, 12 points from Luke Baltz, and 11 points each from Jason Lee and Gray Thompson. Lee finished just shy of a double-double with nine assists.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis picked up its eighth consecutive win over South Dakota Mines, and fourth-straight at home, to lead the Hardrockers 12-3 all-time.
-The Skyhawks 18 assists match their fourth-most in a game this season.
-Chuol Deng, Stewart Erhart, Jaxon Smith, Donald Bangham, Jr., and Massal Diouf each scored in double figures for their 20th, 20th, 20th, 9th, and 6th times, respectively.
-FLC picked up its 10th consecutive home win and 11th-straight conference win at home.
-Cassius Carmichael tied his season career-high with four assists.

Fort Lewis will close out the regular season in the hunt for a top seed and a first-round home game in the 2026 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on the road next week, first challenging Colorado State University of Pueblo (19-7, 13-5 RMAC) over in Pueblo, Colo., on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks will then cap the regular season at Colorado Christian University (12-14, 7-11 RMAC) on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m.
