Skyhawks open road trip with 82-61 RMAC loss to ThunderWolves

Fort Lewis suffers fifth-straight road loss

PUEBLO, Colo. – In a battle between two of the league's best defensive teams, it was the Skyhawks who found themselves uncomfortable and off-kilter all night, as Colorado State University Pueblo (20-7, 14-5) blew by Fort Lewis (16-10, 14-5 RMAC) 82-61 Thursday night in Massari Arena.

Backed by a formidable home crowd of 1,080, CSU Pueblo shot a lethal 56.9 percent (29-51) from the field while hitting at 46.4 percent (13-28) from the three-point line, paced by junior Jaden Kennis' game-high 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting alongside Dylan Sanders' 16 points on the back of a 4-of-7 night from deep. The Pack also shared the ball on a phenomenal level, racking up 28 assists – good for the fourth-most by any team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this season.

Fort Lewis forced just nine turnovers, tying its second-fewest this year, and managed just six steals to help hang around in the early going. While the Skyhawks shot an efficient 42.9 percent (21-49) and saw double-digit scoring efforts from Stewart Erhart and Jaxon Smith, respectively, the team struggled from range, hitting at 20 percent (3-15) from beyond the arc and 69.6 percent (16-23) at the free-throw line.

Erhart led his squad in most categories, including a team-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Smith finished closely behind with 14 points and three rebounds as well. No individual Skyhawk had more than three rebounds. Massal Diouf fouled out with six points and a pair of boards.

All three lead changes came in the opening minutes, the last coming with a 3-2 swing in favor of the ThunderWolves before The Pack took off. Despite an even eight points off turnovers and 28 points in the paint for both teams, it was a surging 42 bench points, and a 32-27 edge in rebounding for CSU Pueblo that kept Fort Lewis off balance and unable to find a rhythm.

Notes
-CSU Pueblo has downed Fort Lewis in back-to-back meetings, but the Skyhawks still maintain a 59-51 lead in the all-time series. CSUP secured its first win over FLC at home since 2021.
-With the loss, the Skyhawks match the ThunderWolves with a 14-5 record in conference play, giving CSU Pueblo the head-to-head win and the third seed in the upcoming RMAC Tournament. Fort Lewis will need a win on Saturday as well as a CSU Pueblo loss to reclaim the third seed.
-Stewart Erhart and Jaxon Smith finished in double figures for their respective 21st time this season. Smith has scored in double-digits in each of his last five games, to Erhart's three.
-Chuol Deng had each of Fort Lewis' two blocks, bringing his season total to 17.
-Fort Lewis' nine turnovers match its second-fewest in a game this year.
