Game Recap: Softball |

Late rallies come up short as Skyhawks drop a pair on Sunday

Fort Lewis builds offensive momentum with seven runs and 15 hits in game two

DENVER, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball managed to pull within one run of Metropolitan State University of Denver twice in the face of early deficits on Sunday afternoon, but the Skyhawks could not find the timely hit needed to pull ahead, falling 3-2 in game one and 8-7 in 11 innings in game two at the Assembly Athletic Complex.

Fort Lewis fell to 1-11 overall and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while MSU Denver rose to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Freshman Mia Cueva fueled the Skyhawks' offense at the plate, going 4-for-6 on the day, including 3-for-4 in game two, with a double, one run scored, and one run-batted-in (RBI). Alyssa Fockler was the next closest Skyhawk with three hits across the afternoon, while Trista Hoobler, Alex Tenorio, Cali Niccum, McKenna Timmons, and Skyler Dietz all had two hits apiece.

MSU Denver 3, Fort Lewis 2
Sophomore Chloe Padilla (0-5) tossed her third complete game of the season to open up the four-game conference series, with the right-hander from Fruita, Colo., surrendering just three earned runs on four hits and two walks against a season-high six strikeouts.

Padilla's lone blemish ultimately came in her first meeting with senior Cheyenne Prieto, surrendering a three-run home run, which stood the distance as the game-winner, after a lead-off walk to Victoria Pearson and a walk to Janessa Esquibel the following at-bat put Roadrunners on the corners.

MSU Denver was forced to respond in its own half of the first inning after the Skyhawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Fockler was granted home plate on a throwing error by the catcher that hit Makenna Milliman at the plate and bounced out of play. Fort Lewis, and more specifically, Mia Cueva, would add pressure in the top of the sixth, first using a lead-off double, the first extra-base hit of her career, to get in scoring position before using back-to-back wild pitches to score. Fockler singled to open the final frame, reaching second base on a fielding error, but was ultimately stranded with back-to-back pop-ups.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Natalie Romero (2-2) picked up the win, throwing the first 5.0 innings with four walks, four strikeouts, two wild pitches, and three hits before right-hander Brooklyn Levin earned her first save of the season with only one hit and three strikeouts in her final 2.0 innings of work.

MSU Denver 8, Fort Lewis 7 (11 Inn.)
As both teams settled into the afternoon, so too did both offenses, combining for 29 hits in the final game of the afternoon. The Roadrunners got hot first, scoring in the bottom of the first inning before later erupting for four runs in the second, stringing together three singles and a double, as well as a stolen base, to take an early 5-0 advantage. A solo home run in the fourth and another RBI double in the sixth gave MSU Denver a comfortable 7-0 lead.

The cards began to fall in favor of Fort Lewis at the top of the sixth inning as Tenorio and Carmen Alexander exchanged back-to-back doubles to break the shutout. Mia Cueva fired a sacrifice fly to left field after a pair of walks to plate another, and Fockler rifled an RBI single to left field to keep the bases loaded with one out.

MSU Denver brought in Samantha Mader (1-0) out of the bullpen to curb the momentum. Still, Hoobler was unfazed, belting the second pitch of her at-bat off the chalk down the right field line for a bases-clearing triple and setting the stage for Tenorio to single the following at-bat and tie the game. The Roadrunners went on to break through in the bottom of the 11th as Prieto played hero once again with a game-winning double to follow a lead-off walk.

Hailie Mann (1-2) hung tough with the Roadrunners, forcing the game into extra innings with six earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out a season-high nine batters. Addison Gavigan (0-3) suffered the loss, throwing the final 1.0 inning with one hit, one run, and two walks to her line. Levin, riding the momentum of her save in game one, held Fort Lewis hitless in her 2.0 innings of relief while striking out a pair to capture her second win of the year.
