Women’s golf underway at WT Desert Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Fort Lewis women's golf team kicked off its final regular-season on Monday afternoon, and the Skyhawks combined for a first-round 322 (+34) to trail the field in the West Texas A&M Desert Invitational at Ventana Canyon Club and Lodge.
 
Senior Dimery Plewe went the lowest among Skyhawks, capturing a pair of birdies, one each on the front and back nine, to shoot a team-best 79 (+7) and sit in T-38. Sophomore Peyton Gibby, despite one birdie, turned in an 80 (+8) behind Plewe to reside in T-45 as the only Skyhawks inside the top 50 of the 76-player field.
 
As a team, Fort Lewis took a two-stroke lead over 13th-place Westminster University's 324 (+36), and a five-stroke lead over last-place Metropolitan State University of Denver's 327 (+39). California State University East Bay, ranked No. 54 on SCOREBOARD, owns an eight-stroke lead on the team leaderboard as the only unit below par, firing a 287 (-1) in its first trip around the 5,802-yard, par 72 course. Cal State East Bay's Chantel Tsai and Carlota Eroles top the individual leaderboard with scorecards of 68 (-4) and 70 (-2).
 
Isabel Bustillos and Ellie White round out the four Skyhawks contributing to the team's score, as well as combining for four of the team's nine birdies, tied for the fourth-most in the tournament. Bustillos carded an 81 (+9) to White's 82 (+10). Sarah Grenemyer is the final Skyhawk in the tournament and resides in T-66 with a round-one 85 (+13).
