Women’s golf gets underway with RJGA Shootout at Estrella

DURANGO, Colo. – The Skyhawks women's golf 2026-27 season begins this Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 14-15, as Fort Lewis heads over to the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., for the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association's Shootout at Estrella.

A Look Back at 2025-26
Skyhawks women's golf looks to build on its upward momentum this season after back-to-back years with a program-best fifth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. Junior Peyton Gibby looks to lead Fort Lewis through yet another season after the Gilbert, Ariz., native took 10th in her first RMAC Championships two years ago with a 223 9+7) and followed it up with a T-8 finish last season on the strength of a 189 (+9). Fort Lewis added another pair of top-five finishes last year, taking T-4 at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational (Sept. 21-22) with a 621 (+45) and third place at the SMSU Spring Invitational (Mar. 9-10) on a 624 (+48).
 
Following the season, senior Dimery Plewe was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic First Team. In contrast, Gibby and Annika Gutierrez made the RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll. In addition, Plewe and Gutierrez were elevated to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Teams.
 
Under New Leadership
First-time head coach Todd Henderson enters his first year leading the Skyhawks women's golf program. The former NCAA Division II student-athlete at California State University, Dominguez Hills, joins the coaching ranks after spending the past few years working on golf operations at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., while also competing in a variety of professional mini tours.
 
New Lineup
Fort Lewis brought in three young talents for the upcoming season, including Abigail Gryzynger out of Sabino High School in Tucson, Ariz., Paola Guerrero from Sahuarita High School in Sahuarita, Ariz., and Eleanor Pilgrim out of Claudia Taylor Johnson High School in San Antonio, Texas.
 
First Squad for 2026-27
The Skyhawks have a veteran lineup for the first showing of 2026-27, including Gibby, Gutierrez, senior Isabel Bustillos, sophomore Ellie White, and Guerro. In addition, Gryzynger will also compete as an unattached individual. Last fall, Fort Lewis finished ninth among 14 teams, carding a 619 (+43). Gutierrez notched the highest finish among Skyhawks returning to the event, taking T-41 on the back of a 156 (+12).
 
Forecast
High heats will provide the toughest test at the tournament, with highs of 104 degrees and 101 degrees forecasted for Monday and Tuesday, respectively. In addition, slight breezes of 7-8 miles per hour are expected. A shotgun start is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. local time.
 
First Set of Competition
Fort Lewis will face a loaded field that includes a plethora of regional opponents, including California State University, Los Angeles, Texas A&M University–Kingsville, Western New Mexico University, Vanguard University, California State University, San Marcos, University of Texas at Dallas, Colorado Christian University, Dominican University (Calif.), California State University, East Bay, Lubbock Christian University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, Chico State University, Point Loma Nazarene University, Angelo State University, and Jessup University.
 
Golf Club of Estrella
Golf Club of Estrella can stretch out to as far as 7,139 yards from the black tees, but this week's tournament will be played to 5,901 yards, with a slope and rating hovering around 123 and 72.1. Par for the course is 72.
 
Looking Ahead
Next week, the Skyhawks will return to the Westminster Wasatch Invitational for a second straight year. The two-day, 36-hole tournament will take place at Glenmoor Golf Club in South Jordan, Utah, on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 20-21.
