Guerrero leads Skyhawks women in collegiate debut

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – True freshman Paola Guerrero carded a one-over-par 73 in her collegiate debut to position the Fort Lewis women's golf team in seventh place among 16 teams after the first round of the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association Shootout at Estrella.

Guerrero, a native of Sahuarita, Ariz., showed up to compete in her home state, sinking a trio of birdies on holes four, twelve, and sixteen to offset two bogeys and a double-bogey on hole six. Guerrero sits T-13, one stroke back from the top five and three strokes from the top three. Fort Lewis fired off a 304 (+16) as a team, sitting one stroke ahead of Angelo State University (+17) and two strokes behind Dominican University (Calif.) (+14).

California State University, San Marcos was the only team to shoot under par and leads the field by four strokes at 286 (-2). The Cougars boast the top-two individuals in tournament leader Carmella Carlisi (-4) and Ellaclair Leedom (-2).

Junior Peyton Gibby is in the hunt in T-24, using a single birdie to finish round one with a 75 (+3). Juniors Isabel Bustillos and Annika Gutierrez round out Fort Lewis' scoring team, with Bustillos residing in T-35 on a 77 (+5) and Gutierrez in T-56 on a 79 (+7).

Sophomore Ellie White shot an 81 (+9) to sit at T-66, and Abigail Gryzynger, who traveled to compete as an unattached individual, scored an 82 (+10) in her collegiate debut to sit at T-70.

Final Round
Fort Lewis will wrap up the tournament with one final round tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 15.
