Skyhawk men, women finish eighth, ninth, respectively, at RMACs

Adams State wins men’s title, Western State claims women’s crown

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Fort Lewis men's and women's cross country teams finished eighth and ninth, respectively, today at the 2010 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.

The Skyhawk men finished eighth out of 11 teams with a total of 206 points. The Skyhawks were led by Kiprono Mutai, who completed the 8k race with a personal-best time of 25:10, good for 25th in the league standings. Other FLC's men's finishers included Jeff Hofferber (36th overall, 26:10), Michael Birgen (51st, 26:26), Justin Miller (40th, 27:08), Randy Nez (54th, 27:31), Patrick Tso (56th, 27:43) and Derek Laue (59th, 28:18).

The Skyhawk women finished ninth out of 13 teams with a total of 232 points. FLC's women's finishers included Ashley Kelly (32nd, 23:38), Maddie Kruger (37th, 23:49), Helen Smith (43rd, 24:08), Liz Schwab (66th, 25:33), Megan Derschang (69th, 25:42), Morgan Love (80th, 26:48) and Jaclin Guthrie (84th, 27:19).

Adams State captured the men's team title with 30 points, followed by Western State (47), Colorado Mines (75), Metro State (140), New Mexico Highlands (154), Nebraska-Kearney (167), UC-Colorado Springs (178), Fort Lewis (206), Colorado Christian (303), Western New Mexico (305) and Regis (311).

Adams State's Ryan McNiff completed the 8k course in 23:50, just four seconds in front of Colorado Mines' Aaron Swift to capture the individual title and the RMAC Men's Runner of the Year award. Western State's Ryan Haebe (fifth place, 24:03) was the top freshman finisher to claim the RMAC Men's Freshman of the Year honor. Damon Martin of Adams State was voted as RMAC Men's Coach of the Year.

Western State captured the women's team title with 31 points, followed by Adams State (42), Regis (113), Mesa State (129), Colorado Mines (150), Metro State (170), Nebraska-Kearney (171), UC-Colorado Springs (176), Fort Lewis (232), Colorado Christian (247), New Mexico Highlands (321), CSU-Pueblo (339) and Western New Mexico (360).

Mesa State's Alexis Skarda completed the 6k course in 20:22, a good 14 seconds in front of Adams State's Kristin McGlynn to capture the individual title and the RMAC Women's Runner of the Year award. Adams State's Kelly Lamb (sixth place, 21:24) was the top freshman finisher to claim the RMAC Women's Freshman of the Year honor. Jennifer Michel of Western State was voted as RMAC Women's Coach of the Year.

All of the RMAC teams advance to the NCAA Division II Central Regionals, to be held in Wayne, Neb., on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010. Top teams and individuals in that meet will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, to be held in Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 4.
