LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Fort Lewis College cross country teams had strong showings at the Triton XC Classic Saturday, an event hosted by the University of California-San Diego. The Skyhawk men took fourth place while the FLC women set four personal records at the 6k distance.
The FLC men's squad was once again led by walk-on freshman
Christian Gering (15th, 34:14). Also competing for the Skyhawks were

Logan Ott (33rd, 35:41.8),

FLC's top men's runner —
Kip Mutai — was held out of the race to recover from minor injuries.
Michael Birgen, who missed last week's Rocky Mountain Shootout, competed, but did not finish.
UC-San Diego won the men's 10k with 36 points, followed by Central Arizona (46), Calif. Poly Pomona (69), Fort Lewis (116), Calif. State-Monterrey Bay (124), and Western New Mexico (155).
Calif. Poly Pomona's Ryan Carrell won the men's individual crown by finishing in 32:44.9 — nearly five seconds faster than runner-up Matt Lenehan of UC-San Diego.
The Fort Lewis women's squad finished 13th in the women's 6k with 297 points.
Helen Smith led the way (37th, 24:20.6), followed by Amber Izzo (58th, 24:55),
Maria Creech (72nd, 25:18.8),
Liz Schwab (78th, 25:27.7),
Courtney Ott (103rd, 26:36.9),
Morgan Love (105th, 26:44.3),
Kiara Glover (109th, 27:18.6),
Courtney Ragle (116th, 28:07.2), and
Kolette Dayish (119th, 29:03.3).
UC-San Diego won the women's 6k team competition with 38 points, followed by Central Arizona (120), San Diego State (124), Calif. State-Los Angeles (138), Calif. State-San Bernardino (139), UC-Irvine (151), Calif. State-Bakersfield (167), Calif. State-Monterrey Bay (173), Calif. Poly Pomona (223), Western New Mexico (248), Sonoma State (Calif.) (283), Pacific (Calif.) (284), and Fort Lewis (297).
Unattached runner Breanne Stenkowski won the women's race in 21:18.1. The top collegiate finisher was San Diego State's Marianne Hogan (22:01.8).
Fort Lewis won't race again until the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships, to be held on Oct. 22 in Denver. The women will race at the 6k distance, while the men will run 8k.
