Skyhawks Fall in Homecoming Game to Colorado Mesa, 42-0

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks spoiled the Skyhawks Homecoming game Saturday afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, shutting out Fort Lewis College, 42-0. 
 
The Mavericks found the end zone on their first two drives of the game.  On the opening drive, CMU went down the field in six plays to take a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game.
 
The Skyhawks opening drive of the game resulted in a three-and-out.  Punting from his 22-yard line, Scottie Gallardo booted his first of punt of the game 77 yards. 
 
Fort Lewis came close to stopping the Mavericks on the ensuing drive.  Jamal Cambpell intercepted the ball in the end zone preventing the Mavericks from scoring their second touchdown of the game.  However, a holding penalty on the Skyhawks nullified the interception.  Jake Cimolino ran in from four yards, posting his first of three touchdowns of the game.
 
The Skyhawks next two drives resulted in punts as they trailed 14-0 after the first quarter. 
 
Terry Perkins picked off the Mavericks at the start of the second quarter, starting the Skyhawks drive on their own 42-yard line.  Three plays later FLC went three-and-out.  The Skyhawks then held CMU to a three-and-out series on the next drive, including a loss of 18 yards for the Mavericks on the drive. 
 
Fort Lewis had a chance to get on the scoreboard but missed a 27-yard field goal attempt far left.  CMU then drove down the field to take a 21-0 lead.  On FLC's following drive, the Skyhawks drove down the field before fumbling the ball on a first-and-10 on the CMU 12-yard line.  The Mavericks Andrew Hurley recovered the ball and returned it 84 yards to open the lead to 28-0 at the half. 
 
Cimolino added two more touchdowns from distances of 26-yards out (rushing) and a 25-yard catch, boosting the Mavericks lead to 42-0. 
 
Cimolino finished the game with 110 rushing yards on 18 carries.  He also caught three passes for 58 yards and a score.
 
The Mavericks completed 20-of-29 passes for 258 yards and three scores.
 
Fort Lewis netted 112 passing yards after completing 15-of-26 passes.  Max Baiz, who completed 13-of-21 passes (two touchdown) for 92 yards, was sacked seven times.  He and teammate Amery Duncan led the Skyhawks in rushing with 29 yards each.
 
Gallardo punted six times against the Mavericks, averaged 52.7 yards per punt.  Three of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line.
 
Ryan Ross tied for team high honors with Jamal Campbell with eight tackles.  Ross also recorded the Skyhawks only two sacks of the day (loss of 17 yards). 
 
CMU's Jake Edmiston led both teams with 12 solo stops and three assists tackles for a game high 15.  Hurley, who posted 11 tackles, added three sacks for a loss of 23 yards and returned the fumble 84 yards for a score.
 
Fort Lewis (2-5, 1-4 RMAC) will play at Western State on Saturday, Oct. 26.  Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
