Fort Lewis Falls in Five to UC-Colorado Springs

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team held a 2-0 set lead Thursday evening against UC-Colorado Springs, but was unable to finish the match, falling in the next three sets to lose the match, 3-2.

The Skyhawks (5-14, 5-6 RMAC) won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-18 before dropping the next three sets 25-20, 25-19 and 15-12.

Fort Lewis trailed by as many as six points early in the first set but went on an 11-2 run to take the lead, 16-15, that they would not relinquish.  Set two went smoother for the Skyhawks as they tied the set 3-3 after trailing by two points and never trailed the rest of the set.

The Mountain Lions (10-10, 6-6 RMAC) avoided the sweep in set three as they battled with Fort Lewis for three lead changes and the scored tied seven different times in the set.

Set four turned south for the Skyhawks when UCCS jumped out to a 12-1 lead.  The Skyhawks battled back to go on a 22-6 run and edge up to the Mountain Lions, 23-18, but could not finish the set as UCCS evened the match, 2-2.

In the 15-point fifth set, FLC and UCCS tied the set eight times and changed the lead three times.  The Skyhawks last lead of the set was 11-9 before UCCS finished the match on a 6-1 run. 

Three Skyahwks recorded double digit kills with Madi Bickle leading both teams with 17.  Bickle hit .481 after committing only four errors on 27 attempts.  Ashley Wells chipped in 13 kills, three assists, 16 digs and two blocks.  Stephani Sonka added 12 kills to the Skyhawks 57-kill offense.

Heather Danny posted a match high 49 set assists, while Jenna Kinzer notched a match high 20 digs. 

Jordan Banich led UCCS with 15 kills, four service aces and 10 digs.

The Skyhawks will play host to Metro State Friday night at 7 p.m., and Regis University on Saturday at 5 p.m.
