Box Score CHADRON, Neb. – Several key defensive stops and a solid offense led Chadron State College to a 34-10 home win over Fort Lewis College Saturday afternoon. The loss moves the Skyhawks overall record to 4-6, and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Eagles, who are playing for an NCAA playoff spot, improve to 8-2 overall and 7-1 in the league.
After forcing the Eagles to punt on their opening drive, Fort Lewis marched down the field to CSC's 15-yard line but threw an interception in the end zone that resulted in a touchback. The Eagles capitalized on the turnover and drove 80 yards in six plays to take a 7-0 lead. Jonn McLain completed his fourth pass of the drive to Danny O'Boyle for a 38-yard touchdown pass.
On the Skyhawks ensuing drive, they moved down the field 40 yards on 11 plays before turning the ball over on downs. CSC responded five plays later on a McLain to Cody Roes 45-yard touchdown pass for a 14-0 lead.
Fort Lewis cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:33 left in the first half when
Joey Alvarez recovered a fumble on FLC's 30-yard line and ran it back for a 70-yard touchdown run. The Eagles would convert a 29-yard field goal attempt and a three-play, 53 yard drive to take a 24-7 lead at the half.
The Skyhawks committed their second red zone turnover of the game when CSC intercepted the ball in their own endzone on the Skyhawks third-and-goal attempt from the CSC 16-yard line. The turnover resulted in a successful 76 yard drive and the fourth touchdown of the day for the Eagles, this time McLain to Glen Clinton for a 13-yard strike.
On the Eagles opening drive, the Skyhawks defense stopped CSC on fourth-and-three on FLC's 29 yard line.
Kipp Castanha finished FLC's opening drive of the fourth quarter with a 43-yard field goal to cap off the Skyhawks 6-play, 45-yard drive.
Randy Wentz completed the scoring for the game with a 32-yard field goal with only 1:16 left in regulation, sealing CSC's win, 34-10.
The Skyhawks totaled 316 yards of total offense. All three FLC quarterbacks took snaps in the game, totaling 228 passing yards (three interceptions).
Drew Berryhill caught three passes for 61 yards, including a long of 46 yards.
CSC amassed 160 more yards of total offense than FLC, with 322 yards coming through the air. McLain completed 20-of-25 passes for two scores and 292 yards (no interceptions). Roes went over the century mark with 101 receiving yards on eight catches.
Jamal Campbell and Alvarez led the Skyhawks with eight tackles each. Alvarez also had a tackle for a loss of one yard to go with his 70 yard fumble return.
The Eagles Trelan Taylor led both teams with 11 tackles. Kyle McCarthy posted 10 tackles and took part in 2.5 sacks of the Eagles five team sacks (total loss of 36 yards). CSC also accumulated eight tackles for a loss of46 yards.
Fort Lewis will play their final game of the regular season at home on Nov. 16 against Black Hills State. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
