ThunderWolves take two of three from Fort Lewis softball team

DeHerrera’s three-run homer in sixth leads FLC to opening-game win

Destinee DeHerrera hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to lead FLC to a 12-11 win over CSU-Pueblo in game one Monday.
Game 1 – FLC 12, CSUP 11
Game 2 – CSUP 6, FLC 1
Game 3 – CSUP 10, FLC 3

FARMINGTON, N.M.   Colorado State-Pueblo (11-5 overall, 8-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) took two of three from Fort Lewis (5-10, 3-7) today at Ricketts Field #3, winning 6-1 and 10-3 after dropping the opener 12-11.

Destinee DeHerrera smashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to cap four-run rally to give the Skyhawks the victory in the opener.

The Skyhawks rallied from deficits three times during game one. Kaylynn Harmon hit a towering grand slam down the right field line in the first to give the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead.

The ThunderWolves answered with a Dora Hernandez grand slam to left center in the top of the third as CSUP reclaimed the lead at 8-4.

Fort Lewis rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score at 8-8 as Mariah Stuart and Erica Conley each delivered two-run singles.

CSU-Pueblo responded in the top of the sixth, though, as Hernandez and Carlie Lucas doubled in a frame that saw three CSUP hits.

That set up a big sixth for the Skyhawks. Chelsea Rodriguez drove in Missy Fundora with a single to center. After Harmon had an infield single, DeHerrera cleared the bases with her first home run of the season.

The ThunderWolves got one back on Hernandez's single up the middle in the top of the seventh, but relief pitcher Katie Watkins retired the last three, thanks in large part to a 5-3 double play.

Victoria Johnson (2-2) worked six innings to pick up her second collegiate win. She struck out six while surrendering 10 earned runs on seven hits and four walks.

Harmon went 3-for-4 in the opener, driving in four while scoring four times. DeHerrera went 2-fo-4 with three RBI, while Fundora was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Justine Bosio (5-3) allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits and three walks. She helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, including a line drive that cleared the centerfield fence in the top of the first. Hernandez went 2-for-5 with five RBI.

Kelli Henry (6-1) earned a complete-game victory for the ThunderWolves in game two, striking out seven while allowing just four hits in a complete-game victory. She took a shutout into the seventh before allowing doubles to Cierra Walters and DeHerrera that flanked a Rodriguez sacrifice bunt.

The ThunderWolves got all the offense they'd need in the top of the second of game two, as they pieced together three runs on three hits and a pair of walks to take a 3-0 lead. They added three in the seventh by racking up three more runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman.

Kassie Haubert (1-6) gave up six runs on 14 hits and three walks to suffer the loss.

Henry gave the ThunderWolves three more quality innings in the finale, as CSUP led 6-1 before she gave way to reliever Bosio, who worked the last four to pick up the victory.

Fort Lewis committed three errors in the top of the second to help CSU-Pueblo to a five-run inning that FLC would never recover from. In the frame, they managed to chase Skyhawk starter Watkins (2-2), who worked just one inning while giving up six runs (two earned). Haubert was solid in relief  (four earned runs in six innings while striking out seven), but the Skyhawks could never recover from the 6-0 hole they'd dug themselves.

Bosio hit a two-run dinger — her second long ball of the day — to extend the lead to 8-1 in the fourth.

A pair of run-producing infield singles by DeHerrera and Kamali'i Peneku in the fifth pulled FLC to within 8-3, but the ThunderWolves added a pair in the sixth to account for the final 10-3 margin.

Hernandez, Alexa Snyder and Samantha Rios each had three hits for CSUP in the finale.

DeHerrera and Peneku led the Skyhawks with two hits each in game three.

The teams salvaged a tripleheader today in what was originally scheduled as a four-game series in Durango. Doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday and Sunday were scrapped due to a winter storm that rolled through the Four Corners this past weekend.

“We are happy that we were able to play today,” said third-year FLC head coach Kira Zeiter. “We are still working on putting everything together on the field consistently. But being on the field all this week will be a big help.

Zeiter extended her thanks to Farmington Parks and Recreation for their help in relocating the series.

The Skyhawks return to action next weekend, when they'll play Colorado Mesa (9-6-1, 7-2-1) in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
