Mavericks rumble past Skyhawks in Grand Junction

Fort Lewis exits series with first road win of 2026

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Unable to keep pace with the fast-charging Mavericks offense, the Fort Lewis softball team (8-34, 7-25 RMAC) fell 16-1 in game one and 16-8 in game two, both in five innings, to surrender the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series to Colorado Mesa University (21-19, 20-12 RMAC).

Game One – Colorado Mesa 16, Fort Lewis 1 (5 Inn.)
Colorado Mesa scored early and often in Sunday's early morning showing, exploding for 16 runs on 15 total hits, including 10 consecutive runs in the bottom of the first inning, and seven-straight before Fort Lewis recorded its first out. It was the long ball that sank the Skyhawks, with the Mavericks sending four home runs, all by different players, over the fence.

The Skyhawks managed to avoid the shutout in the top of the fifth and final inning, as Alyssa Fockler singled to right field to score Trista Hoobler, who had reached earlier in the frame on a fielder's choice.

In total, nine different CMU student-athletes recorded hits, with five players securing multi-hit games and another five with two or more runs batted in (RBI). CMU chased out Skyhawks starter Izzy Cueva (2-4) after scoring six runs on four hits, a hit batter, and a walk before an out was recorded, and Addison Gavigan (0-5) after just 1.0 inning with another six earned runs on five hits and a walk.

Sophia Tassinari (12-10), who suffered the loss in game one of the series yesterday and earned the win in a short relief appearance in game two, cruised through her second start of the series. The junior right-handed pitcher gave up the lone run on five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts through 67 pitches.

Game Two – Colorado Mesa 16, Fort Lewis 8 (5 Inn.)
The Mavericks, on the brink of winning their sixth conference series thus far, showed no signs of slowing down, matching their game one performance with another 16 runs, this time on just 12 hits and a pair of Fort Lewis errors. Colorado Mesa scored in all but the fourth inning, including a pair of crooked first and third innings of six and seven runs, respectively.

Fort Lewis managed to respond, however, scoring two runs in its first trip to the plate thanks to a two-RBI home run hot off the bat of Carmen Alexander, her team-leading seventh of the season. The Skyhawks tacked on another three runs in the visitors' half of the third, first with a double from McKenna Timmons and twice more with RBI singles from Makenna Milliman and Allieghfaye Abbie. The Skyhawks' final three runs came in the top of the fifth inning as Paige Fuller notched an infield RBI single before Alyssa Fockler put an RBI single to right-center field, and Mia Cueva picked up an infield RBI groundout.

Hailie Mann (5-10) was dealt the loss for FLC, going 2.0 innings with 12 earned runs on 11 hits, five walks, and a hit batter on her ledger. Mann recorded the lone strikeout for Fort Lewis. Chloe Padilla (1-15) came in on relief, tossing the final 2.2 innings with just one earned run allowed on one hit, a hit batter, a pair of walks, and a trio of wild pitches.

Marisa Nehm (8-6) worked the victory for the Mavericks, throwing 4.1 innings while surrendering eight earned runs on 11 hits, three walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch. Tassinari returned for relief once more and kept a clean sheet through the final 0.2 innings of the game.

Notes
-Colorado Mesa moved to 135-27 all-time over Fort Lewis, and won its 11th consecutive series over the Skyhawks.
-With her seventh home run of the season, Alexander moves into a tie for the 10th-most homers in the RMAC this season.
-Izzy Cueva improved her team-leading batting average to .317.
-Carmen Alexander, with 31 RBIs thus far, leads all Skyhawks and is the only student-athlete on the roster with 20 or more.
