Skyhawks salvage Friday afternoon victory

Izzy Cueva snags back-to-back wins in consecutive starts

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis softball (7-31, 6-22 RMAC) kicked off a blustery afternoon with a compelling 8-2 victory in game one, but New Mexico Highlands University (11-29, 9-19 RMAC) came roaring back, putting up a 13-3 run-rule victory in the matinee for the Cowgirls to capture the four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series 3-1 up on the rim.

Game One – Fort Lewis 8, New Mexico Highlands 2
Izzy Cueva (2-3) toed the rubber in the circle for Fort Lewis, and the freshman picked up right where she left off last week, cruising to her second-straight victory in her third complete game outing of the year. Backed by a strong start from her offense, the Vacaville, Calif., native blanked the Cowgirls in five frames, including the first four to start the game, scattering seven hits, seven walks, a wild pitch, and a hit batter for two earned runs.

Fort Lewis got the Cowgirls early, racking up six runs in the bottom of the first inning by way of five walks alongside a run batted in (RBI) double from Skyler Dietz, a two RBI double the next at-bat from Carmen Alexander, and later a bases-clearing three RBI double hot off the bat of Allieghfaye Abbie. Despite coming up empty in the next two innings, the Skyhawks would add a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the fourth, first as Mia Cueva swiped home on a wild pitch and again on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Alexander.

New Mexico Highlands matched Fort Lewis with seven total hits, but came away with 11 runners left on base. It took until the top of the fifth inning for the Cowgirls to scratch together a run, first with an RBI single through the right side before Yasmin Villa knocked in the final run of the ball game with an RBI single of her own in the top of the sixth. London Lamb (1-10) was dealt the loss, surrendering six earned runs on five walks and three hits in just 1.0 innings while striking out a pair.

Game Two – New Mexico Highlands 13, Fort Lewis 3 (5 Inn.)
Despite an emphatic start by the Skyhawks' offense, game two came up all New Mexico Highlands as the Cowgirls put on a hitting clinic with 18 total hits, also taking advantage of five walks from FLC pitchers. Meanwhile, Jolissa Valdez (4-9) cruised to the win once again, giving up just three earned runs on five hits, three of which came in the first inning, with three strikeouts while not allowing a walk.

The Skyhawks leapt out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, utilizing an RBI single from Dietz that scored Tenorio, who kicked off the inning with a double to center field. Alexander then sent the first pitch she saw up into the jet stream above the mesa, securing a two-run home run, her team-leading sixth overall and third in her last five games, that cleared the left field fence with ease. FLC would muster up just a pair of singles from Izzy Cueva and Stella Romeo the rest of the way.

The Cowgirls' first run of the game came on a double steal and a throwing error at the top of the second inning, but it set the stage for NMHU to erupt for eight runs on seven hits in the top of the third, aided by a pair of walks and another throwing error by the Skyhawks. Most notably, New Mexico Highlands kicked off the inning with four straight hits, including doubles from Yasmin Villa and Jazmyn Griego, and a walk before the first out was made.

After leaving three runners on base in the top of the fourth inning, the Cowgirls came roaring back in the fifth, plating a pair of runs on a two-RBI home run from Griego before a two-RBI single from Lily Booth gave the visitors plenty of cushion after activating the run-rule. Hailie Mann (4-9) suffered the loss, exiting after 2.1 innings of work with six earned runs on 10 hits and a walk.
